I've been trying to figure out how to get inexpensive sounds into my 95 Speedster. I don't listen to radio or CDs much, so I was focused on finding an iPod-only solution. I also wanted something that would mount in the drybox compartment, with only an iPod plug to mount on the dash somewhere. Here's what I found:

The Pyle 2-channel marine amp had everything I needed, even an wired volume control.

I had to drill a 1/-inch hole through the dash for that. For the iPod plug and an LED amp on-off switch, I just used the two small vents that already had holes in them. Using the trim piece I removed as a template, I cut out a piece of flexible plastic and siliconed it to hide the screw holes from the trim piece.

I mounted 2 Boss 2-way speakers on each side. I haven't had it out yet to see if it'll give enough volume, but in the garage, it sounded great. Decent bass, plenty loud (the wifey came out and told me to turn it down).

I also mounted an AC accessory charger in case the iPod battery wears out.

As I only spend a few hours at a time out, and only then would I run my iPod sporadically (I'm usually tied up in a flotilla with lots of wattage), I'm gonna give it a try with the single deep cycle battery. I'll just have to make sure to trickle charge it when I get home from the lake.

Plye amp - $40.
Boss Speakers - $30
Misc. supplies - $25
AC Charge Port - $7

All-in - $102 and about 4 hours of time.

I see this thread is 2 years old but what kind of battery is powering the amp? I too just bought a mid 90's speedster and am looking for a cheap way to add some tunes. Thanks!!

I've just got it hooked into the marine deepcell...the previous owner took out the two OEM smaller original batteries and replaced them with one heavy duty truck battery, which lasted me 2 years. I put in a marine battery last year, and it runs the system just fine. I installed a main cut off on the sound system so I don't drain the battery if I forget to turn something off. Never had a problem with it draining the juice. The amp is pretty small...it's not going to blow your ears out, but it's good for my needs.

Thanks man! What do you mean by its good for your needs?? Does that mean you listen to it while drifting or docked? Can you hear it at all while you are on plane? Also, how are the boss speakers? there is a package on amazon with the same amp setup as you plus 2 pyle marine speakers for about $60. I really want something to jam to while cruising up the river, not necessarily something to hear from a tube/wakeboard. Thanks for your fast reply!

Yes, I can hear it when on plane, but it is not overpowering. I mostly use it then anchored or beached. Most of the time, I'm tied up with a bunch of larger boats that all have huge sounds, so I don't even use it. If you plan to use it when on plan, consider a different speaker position - so that they are pointed somewhat toward the back of the boat. I think the Pyle and the Boss are pretty similar, and keep in mind - you are buying a $60 system...it ain't gonna be hi fidelity.
