I've been trying to figure out how to get inexpensive sounds into my 95 Speedster. I don't listen to radio or CDs much, so I was focused on finding an iPod-only solution. I also wanted something that would mount in the drybox compartment, with only an iPod plug to mount on the dash somewhere. Here's what I found:
The Pyle 2-channel marine amp had everything I needed, even an wired volume control.
I had to drill a 1/-inch hole through the dash for that. For the iPod plug and an LED amp on-off switch, I just used the two small vents that already had holes in them. Using the trim piece I removed as a template, I cut out a piece of flexible plastic and siliconed it to hide the screw holes from the trim piece.
I mounted 2 Boss 2-way speakers on each side. I haven't had it out yet to see if it'll give enough volume, but in the garage, it sounded great. Decent bass, plenty loud (the wifey came out and told me to turn it down).
I also mounted an AC accessory charger in case the iPod battery wears out.
As I only spend a few hours at a time out, and only then would I run my iPod sporadically (I'm usually tied up in a flotilla with lots of wattage), I'm gonna give it a try with the single deep cycle battery. I'll just have to make sure to trickle charge it when I get home from the lake.
Plye amp - $40.
Boss Speakers - $30
Misc. supplies - $25
AC Charge Port - $7
All-in - $102 and about 4 hours of time.
