'95 580 coils compatible with '96 580?

Last year my 1996 GTS 587 completely locked up because it wasn't properly flushed (please don't ask). Will a 1995 SP 587 engine (complete working pull) suffice as a replacement, or will the ignition coils not match-up with my '96? My original '96 CDI box is fine, and I don't want to swap it. My local shop told me I'd NEED to get another '96 587, as with any other year the coils wouldn't be guaranteed compatible, and as such no turnover.

I tried swapping in a '92 last year, and I know for a fact that the coil was mismatched (not to mention case dimensions and threads didn't 100% line-up). From 95-->96, it should match, right? I'd appreciate any advice on this subject, generic or otherwise.

Removeing the stator wires

You will need to carefully remove yours from the houseing. In order for the assembly four wires to go thru the houseing hole, you remove the plug by pulling the locking tooth out of the middle of the plug, then use a DETENT tool to push out the pins from the plug. You would need to make an orientation drawing to the plug vs wire color position in order to not mess that up.

Thank you for the responses. Are you saying in your second post that I will need to remove the flywheel and swap the stator from my '96 to the '95 in order for this to work? In other words, the '95 stator won't work with the '96 CDI? Or were you just stating that the grey male housing/connector of the '95 stator didn't match the female connector of the '96 CDI?
You originally stated that the stator's from 95/96 were interchangeable, hence my confusion. If I need to chop off the connectors and swap them, I'd consider that easier than swapping stators! Thanks

Yes, swap out the engines, realign, all should hook up. Do you see a difference in
the magnito connector as your concern? Not the same? No existing "stator problem"?
Both 587's should be four wire & compatable. Unless some is confusing. Look on top of each engines magnito houseing plate, on the top it will read the engine size.
Are both white 587's?

Yes, they're both definitely post-91 (non-yellow) 587's. The engine I'm considering is assuredly a 95 or 96, as the separate grey stator connector was only on the 95/96 587's. I checked the shop manuals for 95 and 96, and the exact stator part numbers match up, so I guess I should have no problem!

Any other reasons I'm not considering where the '95 version won't properly operate with the '96 e-box?

Repped for your timely assistance--thank you!

Good man, I came to the same conclusion. I'd rep you more if I could :) Now comes the fun part. Thanks for all the responses, and have a good weekend.
