Question to the pro's on here...

Looking at post #24, the 4th picture is the backside of the rotary valve cover, which shows scarring. It's partly dirty from sitting in a box and being covered with oil & dirt, so it looks a little worse than it is, but it's notably scratched.

Should I do any type of light sanding to that piece to dull the edges of those scratches or am I overthinking this? Is there a disadvantage to doing this?

Dont worry about that...too minor do cause problems. The only thing that needs smoothing is if there is a sharp edge anywhere.

First off, good for you to keep the ski that got me obsessed with XP's alive and kicking. I LOVED the 94 XP back in the day. Also, its amazing your carbs have never given you issues. Those 650's were known to be finikey. You have a great ski man. Keep her happy.

Lol, when I get home I'll have a few up. Its immaculately clean, just how I try to keep most of my stuff... Pump rebuild will be this weekend, carbs probably next. I'm poking away at it during the lovely Michigan winter downtime..but I just got done moving yesterday, so its been on the back burner.

Wear ring, skat-track 15/20 and fresh pump oil/seal will be done this weekend. People are shocked the pump oil has NEVER been changed either. Bearings seem to be fine also. Its spent its entire life on very clean/clear lakes.

I was 10 yrs old when we bought this in 94. I literally grew up riding this ski, which is why I'm keeping it and going through it. I used to tow my dad on a slalom ski, I learned how to ski and kneeboard behind this thing when i was 10-11...lots of memories..and holy shit, now i'm 27 lol!

Haha, no sh!t? Thats my stomping grounds man!...I graduated from Troy High..
We have a place on Grand Lake in Presque Isle. The ski usually stays up there cuz I haven't had anything to tow it with in yrs, but the plan is to have this thing running well enough this spring to take it to Cass and St. Clair and whatnot.

Haha, its already been drained. Smelled like ass...but have you ever smelled differential fluid with about 100k miles on it? OH. MY. GOD. is it awful...much worse than that pump lube was lol.

Wow, that's a long ways to go esp. for a week end. What is it, about a 4 hour trip? Does the water warm up that far North? I live on a lake in Oakland Co.

Pump is done. I've read everyone's install pages and there are mixed reviews as to how easy or hard it is to get the wear ring in and out...Here are my findings
#1, IMPOSSIBLE without a sawzall lol.
#2, The ring i got from Atlantic Jet sports ended up requiring a shop press with a flat piece of sheet steel over the whole ring to get it to fit. This is after I chamfered the edges of the ring and lubed the pump and the ring itself. I know some might be thinking "sumthins not right?!" But the impeller spins freely with the proper amt of clearance...

Also, props to AJS...they located a rubber cone for the driveshaft side of the used skat-track impeller I bought.

1-Used skat-trak 15/20 slimline and new rubber cone.
1-New wear ring
1-RTV & Gear lube.
Total cost of pump rebuild including aftmkt prop - $150.00:drool5:

Yah 4 hrs. But it's beautiful up there and we've had the place longer than I've been alive...Grand Lake is like bathwater by mid July...I grew up on Huron (we had an old place in Oscoda on the other side of the fam.), so I'm still ok going in there a few weeks after Memorial Day, but its still balls cold lol.

Luckily your wear ring sounds OK...but for others reading this...OEM is the ONLY way to go. The aftermarket rings have horrible quality control and it isnt worth the headache.

The trick you ask?? put the ring in the freezer overnight...they will almost slide right in. Few light taps will get it all the way in.

I specified that I was getting an OE ring from AJS and I got a bag with a diff. part number. I don't know if they retag them or what, but I was under the assumption I was getting an OE one...

I hear freezing does the trick, it was sitting in my garage for a week around 35 degrees, how bout that? lol

I have them just chilling in my garage freezer...at 0. They typically slide halfway in by hand, and take a couple taps with a 2x4 and a hammer and they are in.

Sorry, no closeups, but thats grand lake; my dad riding it like an idiot; the clear water is lake Huron in Presque Isle, where we sometimes trailer it...5 min. from Grand Lake...this all makes me hate f'n winter at the moment...thx

Carbs are apart, all but 2 screws came out just fine...the other two are another story, which i'm still working on finishing...

I'm having issues getting the replacement check valve disks back in the forward carb. There are little rubber nipple retainers (I'm at work and cant reference Mikuni's instructions for what they're called) that you are supposed to have a Mikuni specific tool to press them through to hold the plastic check valve disks. I've torn through 2 of the rubber retainers trying to get them in. I've used lithium grease to try to ease it in, still doesn't work.

Any of the pro's have suggestions for this shade tree?? In hindsight, I should've probably left them in there, they don't seem to be a wearable item..

Yup...I use spit...lol

You need to make a teardrop shaped nub on the end of a nail or something...I used a screwdriver.

Those things will rip/poke easily...what I do is start them by pushing in the hole, then holding it with a finger while I use the same tool to push the edges of the rubber nub into the pump piece.

If you poke a hole into them they are done for. I have extras if you need them.

Update to carb rebuilding... I will be using the services of Nick (Minnetonka4me) to have the check valve disks installed.

I'm very confident in my mechanical abilities, but there are certain niche services that not everyone is capable of. Nick has been very honest and forthright with information and help. I would recommend to anyone in need of service that they cannot perform themselves that the inquire with "Mr. Minnetonka!!"

On top of that, he quoted me fair prices on some body parts for my 94, which he'll be shipping back with my carb piece.

Once I receive my part(s) back, I will further confirm that Nick is a stand up guy :thumbsup:

Turns out Motorcity Powersports are a group of nice guys. I figured I would make one stop locally to see if I could have my fuel pump body check valves installed before I sent it out to the ever helpful Nick.

I got a "don't worry about it" when they handed me my part back...I was stunned. So I bought the guy lunch. Still some good people out there in the service world. Nick your services weren't needed, although I appreciate your willingness. - Anyone in need of work they can't perform should inquire with Minnetonka4me after checking with their local dealer...this was an exception IMO:cheers:

YES, I use their place for parts. so far no service has been needed by me. i have a local guy who services mine and he buys parts from there also.

I made a list of approved dealers (not just places that sells parts) around my area. PM me your email and I'll send it over to you. I've also bought parts from Dee's in Clinton township.
