My son just rebuilt his 94 xp.

He was told by a "mechanic" that it needed a whole new engine. Cost him 80 bucks to hear this. At any rate he brought it home and found one of the pistons to be bad. We took the engine apart down to the block and cleaned all metal shavings out. Bought new parts and put it back together. He was very careful in getting everything back to its original position with the help of the shop manual.

The machine turns over and sounds good, but will not start. It will fire just as he lets off of the starter button but will not stay running.

We checked fuel and oil tanks for contamination and found some water and we cleaned them both.
He had already replaced the gray lines using black hose
Took carb off and cleaned filters but we didnt blow out anything with comrpessed air.
New plugs
New battery

What are we missing? Timing? Clogged jets?

Ignition timing wouldn't be it... but the rotary valve can be out of time if you had it apart.

Yes... the carbs may need cleaned... but if you give it a shot of starter fluid... does it run?

Starter fluid will not do it either.
We talked about this too, and he set up the rotary valve according to the shop manual by aligning the marks on the block.
When I read the manual it looked to me like this method was for earlier models, but the 94 has the marks on the block like the picture in the manual.
