Okay, I changed springs back to originals in carbs and the 95 actually started. BUT lacked a lot of power @ wide open when in the water and bogged down to almost nothing. Then it would take a few seconds before it would slowly pick up and take off with little power @ 5000rpm.....The 94 on the other hand still smoked heavily after spring swap and in water had no power. Idle is a little rough too. I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and let a shop take over.

UPDATE: After reading a few horror stories in this forum about shady, misleading, half a$$ shops taking folks to the bank maybe I should keep working on these myself...

I also noticed the 95 had some black fluid that has come out of one of the spark plug holes since running it. (I'm wondering if this might be leftovers from my original Jerry rig job to the diaphragms before buying the rebuild kit?)
Jerry Rig: Black Silicone on diaphragms to temp patch pin holes

Please Help!

This really should be 2 separate threads since you have 2 problems.

BUT.....

The 95....

The carbs still aren't clean, and set up properly. Just because you put in your old springs doesn't mean anything. (I know other guys push for that here) Did you verify the pop-off and make sure the needle wasn't leaking?

When you did your rebuild... did you use compressed air to blow out all the passages in the carbs, and then verify that they were clear by visually seeing carb cleaner come though them?

Did you check the compression? What you are describing could just be low compression. (It should be 150 psi, but anything over 135 will still run)

The 94....

The smoke is oil getting past the crank seals. It will clear out once you get a good run on it.

Otherwise... all of the comments from the 95 apply here.

Both....

The black stuff around the plugs is just a little oil, mixed with carbon. It's normal. Also... you are a wise man to try to take care of it yourself. I have met too many mechanics who shouldn't be allowed to touch tools. (Retards that can't make it doing anything else)

Damn, well I guess I'll have to buy a pop off tester and learn how to do one...As well as a compression test tool and read up on how to do that. As far as the compressed air goes...No. For the most part I sprayed the Carb Cleaner through passage ways and did verify returns. I guess compressed air wouldn't be a bad idea tho.

didnt you mention, that the original springs, were mixed together inna bag?

Knock on wood, but have been overhaul'n/wrench'n on these things for awhile, and have yet, to run into carb problems,..pop-off wrong, when keeping the original springs in. Its when they want free-flow'n air filters installed/brought to me, is when the tester comes out.

:agree:

Yup... what he said.

If you never swapped the springs... there is a good chance they were OK. But, I pop test every carb I touch. Its a quick test, and it beats taking the carbs back off if it doesn't work after the rebuild.

As far as the compressed air... it will force out any junk sitting in the ports. My method is to spray cleaner into the ports... hit them with compressed air, and then spray them again to verify they are open

Yes the springs were mixed together but the 2 separate pairs were very distinguishable. One pair was shiny and the other not so. It was a little difficult figuring out which were firmer than the other. It was a dead even vote in my household...2 of us said the darker ones were firmer and 2 said the shiny ones were firmer so I went with my vote....the darker ones. Anyhow, the darker ones went into the '95 and the shiny in the '94. I was told in a previous post that the 95 had a higher pop off rating so that's what I went with.
