93 Seadoo starting issues, please help?

Hi everyone, I have a 93 seadoo GTX 587 that im trying to restore. My issue is that I can't get it to crank over from the start switch, I was told to touch the contacts on the solenoid to see if it cranks over that way, if it does then it means I need a new starter solenoid, so I did, then I went and bought a new solenoid installed it then tried to see if it would crank over from the switch again and... nothing, still no response.. not sure what to now, I dont want to try touching the contacts with a screwdriver again, not sure if itll harm my new solenoid.. im at a deadend here, can anyone help?.. thanks in advance

When you press the switch do you get anything? any clicking, gauge come on?

You can take meter and test the power to the solenoid. Remove the plug that goes into the new solenoid. Then use a voltmeter to check the voltage on the cable plug when you hit the start button. It should be 12 VDC. If you get 12 volts then check the contacts to make sure they are clean and straight. I messed up a plug by shoving my meter leads in too hard and bent them. Then the new solenoid would not work until I straightened them

Soccerdad.. I put a voltmeter to the plug pressed switch and its 6.25 on the meter. Ace422, I get no clicking sound, no response at all when pressing the start switch.

sounds like you have a dead battery or more likely bad ground cable connections. Check all the cables.

Battery is new, I adjusted the ground wire took another reading and the plug reads between 17 and 20v.. could it be that I have a bad switch?

A battery is basically 12 volts. What plug are you reading that has 17-20 volts?

I'm reading the plug that connects into the lower port of the solenoid

What does your battery read if you test the voltage directly at the battery? Sounds like your meter is off. Since you now have higher voltage (whatever that is...) try plugging it back into the solenoid and see what happens. Any sound at all?

It is impossible to read higher than your battery voltage. So something isn't right.

Generally this is pretty accurate, but is not the case if the trigger (Start / Stop button) wire is not getting 12 volts to the solenoid.

We can help you, but need some accurate info to do so. I know you don't want to jump the solenoid, but it would help us help you. If you jump it, what happens?

I jumped the solenoid.. it cranked right over, I just cant figure out why its not responding from the switch, forgive me im new to this.. I checked the ground wire, tightened it down let me add the previous owners, instead of replacing the switch which is located on the handlebar spliced in a new start switch and placed it on the dash.. i do have a proper handlebar switch which i plugged in however it still doesnt respond..frustrating stuff

Put the meter on the ohmn section. Touch the positive lead to starter positive cable metal end. Ground the negative lead to the engine metal. See if you have a reading. Might have an open circuit in the starter.

Ok,,, since it cranked over we know you have a good battery, cables, connections and a starter. If you can post a picture of your solenoid we can tell you how to test the input. As Mick pointed out, we now need to test the switch. But I'd like to see a picture first..

So where did they put the fuel selector?

It looks like its been taken out, oil pump was also removed then configured to pre mix

Have you put the meter on the new switch? With the meter set to ohms and one lead on each post it should be open, when you press the button it should close and start reading. You have the lanyard key for the DESS post right?

After doing some more wiping it appears I a 657 not a 587?.. I thinking I might have the wrong solenoid to begin with?

ace422, i did what you said, it reads 5.24 on the ohms regardless if I press the start switch or not.. this ski doesnt actually have dess its the old version and i have the lanyard
