787 Engine Teardown

You will want the 1997 and newer cases because they have the drain and fill holes for the counter balancer.

I can't speak highly enough of Nick's service and parts. Everything I have received from him has been exactly as I wanted. Even for a few dollars more you know you will get good parts from him with no hassle.

As far as getting yelled at for SBT, some feel everything they make is perfect and OEM quality and I do not. Some of their stuff is fine and I feel some is not. It looks like you have had a chance to form your own opinion at this point.

man, at this point you might just be better off buying a remanufactured engine, someone who doesn't require a core. Idk if it would be worth it swapping the cases and doing all of that jazz on a 17 year old ski. Your call tho. If it was me, and I could spend an extra hundo or two to just have the engine done for me, I would do it

Yeah sorry its gotten crazy with the pictures. yes you want cases off a 97-99 787 carb machine. I dont have any in silver, but plenty painted white. PM for more info

Will do. There's a place in Mims, FL about an hour from here that has, he claims, "hundreds of them." Where are you located? (thinking shipping $/time) He's going to send me a picture before I drive over there.

It kinda gets down to more than just time and money ... knowing what's in the engine, what quality parts. A two year no fault warranty is great but breaking down, being towed back, pulling the engine, yanking all the peripherals, shipping it, installing the new one, breaking it in .... is more of a pain than the warranty is worth, to me anyway. I am keeping your suggestion as an option, but buying a reman without a core is not a good deal as opposed to throwing my parts into a used case and using it as the core.

Good thing about buying from Nick is he doesn't get many salt turds most Florida skis are salt turds full of corrosion

Good point, if I use the case just for a core to SBT, I don't care. If I decide to rebuild it myself or have someone rebuild my engine, then I'll want a good clean case.

You can get a factory rebuilt short block. For 1422.99.

Yes, but you have to send a rebuildable core to them. Core fee is like 700 if not

Wow ...if the core is worth half the price of the rebuilt, then they must reuse a lot of the parts.

There are three internally threaded bosses on the bottom of the 787 crankcase. Does anyone know what they are for? Maybe that intercooler? They look beefy like for a M8 or bigger bolt. Are these strong enough to mount the engine to a work fixture? I'm also thinking of bolting the work fixture to a heavy bench or mower lift and using that setup to get the PTO flywheel off. Can those bosses take that kind of torque?

Do you have a big vise?

No I don't. If I did guess I could take the crank out with the PTO attached and vise up the crank and twist (or find someone with a big vise). If the case bosses do snap it's not that serious since the case is trash anyway. Just wanted to know if it's even worth the effort making up the jig. The crank might be ok although I won't know until I get the MAG flywheel off (puller enroute).

[EDIT] Just curious ... 1 of 500 what??

Man ... SBT keeps falling down lower and lower on my list of barely tolerable vendors. I ordered another flywheel puller earlier in the week since the first one I ordered from them didn't have the right bolts and didn't work. I added some other tools to get the order over $75 to get free shipping even though I only live 60 miles away from them. So today I'm expecting the puller, but instead I get an email saying my order wasn't processed because the alignment tool is too big for free shipping and has to come FedEx. They couldn't request the added shipping from PayPal so waiting until I called so they could get a credit card. I took today off to finish taking apart the engine.

So I pay the FedEx charge bringing the $150 alignment tool to $171 and it will arrive only five days after I ordered it. And, if that wasn't good enough, now the remaining part of the order without the alignment tool isn't over $75 so I get to pay shipping on that as well.

Sorry to vent but I think I just made decision on whether to get an SBT rebuilt engine or NOT.

Do you have a Harbor Freight close by? Get a 20% off coupon online and get one there.

Yes, there's a Harbor Freight dangerously close (8 mins) ... but their 6" vice is $20 more and looks cheaper (only two mounting holes, etc.) Is 6" big enough to hold a SeaDoo crank to get the PTO flywheel off if I can find a heavy enough bench to bolt it to?

Ah, I have that same vise but was only $30 with a coupon when I got it.

On my way home this morning I stopped and picked up a structural steel beam 8' long, it already had slotted holes the right size and spacing to mount the engine to it using those threaded bosses on the bottom of the crankcase. Manna from heaven.

That PTO flywheel is coming off today.

Hopefully my SBT tools will arrive today as well and I can get the MAG flywheel off and split the case.

Anyone happen to know the thread dia/pitch for those bosses on the bottom of the crankcase? I need to pick up some bolts. I think they are M10 but not sure of the pitch.

[EDIT] OK, same as the exhaust bolts, for the bosses on the bottom of the crankcase, I got M10-1.5 x 25mm.

I was thinking about your situation this morning. Here is what I would do.

1. Email SBT with pics and see if they will weld your cases. Also ask if they will remove your flywheel since you can drive there.
2. If yes to both, then just go that route.
3. If they can't weld but will remove flywheel then get used cases and drive there.
4. If no to both, then email/call SES. I read somewhere that they have done flywheel removal for customers before in a similar situation.

I like to do things myself but there is also a point where the frustration just isn't worth it.
