I am new to the forum and new to PWCs. We purchased a 2011 SeaDoo GTI 155 SE last spring and it's top speed has been 45 since day one. We have friends who have the exect same PWC and it will go 60+ all day long. I have been to 2 different dealers, one who changed the wear ring and the other that said there was nothing wrong. We are using the normal key and the PWC seems to be running at full RPMs (7500) at full throttle.

I have an extended warranty and will be taking it back to the dealer in a few weeks, but was hoping someone on the forum had a similar issue or could help with possible causes.

Thanks - Andy

My 2005 GTX with the same motor goes 58. you have a problem, I just don'y know what it is. Someone on this forum will help.

Thanks Jim and Carguy. I am new to PWCs, so I am not sure what cavitation would feel like, but it seems to do everything it should except for go faster that 45. It pulls all the way through 3/4 throttle and then it just stops acellerating. It does reach full RPMs and there are no strange vibrations. It also seems to burn a lot more gas than it should, or more than our friends who have the same PWC.

Cavitation is "burning out" on the water - when you hit the gas coming off idle, it wouldn't accelerate as quickly, and depending on how bad it is, the ski may vibrate.

Then, no it does not seem to caviate. It accelerates just as quickly as our friends and we used it for tubing several times with no issues.

Hi Jacks and welcome to the forum.

You can search for cavitation in the forum. it's basically letting air flow by the impeller instead of 100% water. Check the wear ring for gouges, tears, etc. Also look at your impeller, (get under the ski or pull the pump) for nicks, bent blades, etc.
I believe the clearance between the ring and tip of blades should be no more than .040"...check it with a feeler gauge, unless the 2011 models are different.

good luck and have fun.

OK, you say it takes off just as well as your friend's ski.......so it could be a different issue then.

Thank you Carguy and Seadoobuddy. I will be headed out next weekend and will check the clearence then and report back. Do you have any recommendations for the best place to get a repair Manual?

If you become a premium member you can download one for free on the forum. but it's tough to take it to the garage with you unless you print 400 pages, but bringing a lap top is possible.

Try amazon or a dealer...Seadoo manuals can run $60 -$80. Some people have a Clymer manual but it's not recommended by the experts here.

If it runs fine till it hits 3/4 throttle, thats is odd. You sure you arent using a learner lanyard? My friend has the same ski and on the dream o meter it hits 58-59.

I have an older gtx and Found that it is possible to program the keys, and I was told my yellow performance key was good but really it was programmed for a trainer key accidentally. Have the dealer reprogram your key and retry it. Or if they can check it and tell the difference. That was my problem. Anyway good luck.

Thank you RFoster and Andy. The keys show up correctley on the display when plugged in (training key shows us as training and normal shows as normal). I dropped both keys off with the both dealers and they said they were programmed right. I will ask the dealer to validate and re-program when I take it back.

if its not the key
it sounds like the wrong prop,
full RPMs not enough bite?
you wonder if some one snatched the prop
before you got it.

key is fine, learner key will say l-key on display like you mentioned.

He doesn't have a dream-o-meter. He has a gps based speedo and they are dead on.

What I think is wrong is a slight air leak in the pump causing minor cavitation. If your getting full rpms, the proplem is in the pump system which is not causing it work properly. Could be the carbon ring driveshaft seal which is not quite sealing. Have your dealer check it.

Or, could be a pump seal problem seen more on the seadoo boats even brand new from the factory, the pwcs is not usually a problem. The airleaks are difficult to find so I suggest having your dealer remove the ride plate and reseal everything. Not a difficult job and only takes an hour or two.

Make sure your dealer actually rides the ski. This type of problem is impossible to solve unless you are actually full speed lake testing.

Thanks ski-d00. I appreciate the information. I had been planning on insiting that the dealer to ride and now I am sure I was on the right track.

What a great site! Appreciate eveyones feedback and willingness to help out.

Thank you screwball, you are absolutely right. All modes and all keys work as described in the manual. I have even tried disconnecting the battery in the hope that it was a computer issue that a reset might cure.

I am dropping of at the dealer this weekend and will report back.

Thanks again for all the support,

Andy

did you buy this new?
from a dealer?
or off someone?
if your getting full RPMs
it sounds like the wrong prop
if it was swaped out before the person
you bought it from?

Even though you have the right key installed you can set the speed limit by scrolling though till you hit key mode. Look at pg 101-102 in the owners manual. In know it list it for learner and rental keys but I can limit the speed on my normal key also.

If he's getting 7500rpms and only going 45mph, the key isn't the problem, it's the pump system. All learner/rental keys limit rpms which is how it keeps the speed lower.

I doubt it has the wrong impeller, but anything is possible. Any reputable dealer should be able to fix this problem in a few hours.

I purchased the GTI 155 limited ski last summer and it hits 55-58 ...... I'm a newbe to this so can't offer much advice but wanted to let you know that model should hit 55.....I had problems initially with it pulling/ leaning to the left....took it back and they adjusted steering wheel. Other than that no other problems...the only thing I can think of is the "mode"....like a previous poster stated. Could it be somehow stuck in "cruise" mode where the maximum speed was set and it's not reverting back? Just trying to think out loud...good luck.
