2010 RXT-215 Drive Shaft issue

Well, I had to get towed for the first time yesterday. After a day of riding, putting over 3 hours on the ski and close to 80 miles we got to the last no wake zone and I let off the throttle to slow down. The ski started to jerk a little and I thought I was running out of gas because the light was on and beeping at me. I went to give it a little throttle to catch up to another ski and out of nowhere there was an ominous grinding noise and the ski had no thrust. Had to get towed back to the ramp, luckily it was only the last 1/2 mile.

After inspecting the ski and finding nothing in the pump, or anywhere else for that matter, I think I've narrowed it down to the drive shaft. After a tip and some research I've found that the 2010 drive shafts have been plagued with premature stripping and failure, and in fact were discontinued...but no recall?

I will get it to the shop this week and it should be covered by warranty, and if not hell will be raised. Just curious if anyone else has had similar problems?

Do they have premature spline failure where the shaft goes into the engine or where the shaft goes into the impeller?

From what I'm reading on other forums, it looks like the splines at the prop are stripping. At fairly low hours too. I see that some people went through 3 or more new prop/shafts before BRP discontinued the 2010 shaft, but again...no recall. I guess I'm lucky to have made it to 141 hours as many had failures as low as 30 hrs or so. The fix appears to be replacing the shaft with the 2011 c-clip style (2010 was used a new type of shaft, which didn't pass the test).

If it is anything like the automotive world.

1). Recalls are done for safety reasons, not what they determine "convenience" concerns.
2). "Convenience" concerns are often a safety issue but not so much so that the Fed Gov steps in to force the recall until YEARS later.

SO in your case,,, it gets recalled like 8 years after the fact. Hang onto your receipt as you will need to prove you had the issue and you fixed the issue..

Good luck to you...

While I agree with you, here's where I think it should be a little different. Take the same problem (stripped driveshaft) that leaves you stranded in the middle of the lake or whatever body of water you ride on, as you're heading back in trying to beat a t storm rolling in. At this point you're nothing more than a bobber that's tossed around by the wind and waves. Equivalent problem in a vehicle gets you stranded on the side of the road. Worst case scenario there you get your hair a little wet if you decide to step out of your vehicle. In the PWC scenario you could actually sink and possibly drown awaiting rescue.

I just think that something on the water or in the air for that matter, should be held to different standards when it comes to "safety" recalls.

No argument, I absolutely agree.

I don't think generically they look at the cause and effect.

On a one on one case they handle it cheaper then saying we will pay for every ski,,,

Suspicions confirmed, drive shaft stripped at the impeller. BRP is covering under warranty. Now it's just a waiting game until parts arrive.
