2009 GTI (rental?) found a part not sure what it is for

I know, sounds stupid right. But this afternoon while looking over the craft, planning for a bilge pump, I noticed a vinyl tube, about 3/8" diameter, coming over the battery. I looked closer and found that it originates in a thru the hull fitting located just below the hull/body seam and above the battery, which is just a maybe 1/8 inch id hole, attached to the (18"?) tube which is open ended and laying there, terminating just in front of the fuel tank.
I can't find it in the part diagrams. Anybody?

Battery vent tube. If you have sealed battery, you will not use it. If you have a vented battery you will use it.
