2008 GTI Slow to start

As the title says my 2008 GTI is slow to start. I have replaced the solenoid and have a good battery and have even tried jumping it off my Yukon at the same time and the starter is just slow to turn over. Here is a link to a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kuc8L4OLW7Q

So is the starter crapping out on me? In the video you can hear a buzzing before it tries to turn, would that indicate something else? Could it be the start switch itself?

Most likely a starter but,,, let's do some testing.

What is the voltage while cranking at the battery and at the starter? If you can't get to the starter, use the output side of the solenoid.

Do not jump the ski from a running vehicle. MPEM don't like the extra amperage and get fried.

Rasting Battery at 12.58 Volts
Starting on Battery drops to about 9.6 V on average
The solenoid out when starting drops to around 7.5 on average sometimes lower. and jumps up when it starts.

I did do the Starter Quick Test today and found that it starts if you hold down the start button for about 2-3 seconds. It also starts on the weak ass motorcycle battery if I hold it down also. I cant really get to the starter to check that connection but it is very tight with no wiggle and so is the engine ground cable. MY ski is fresh water only so the engine is still very clean.

Ok, you have a battery or starter issue. Go get the battery load tested. That will determine what you need to do.

Your drop in voltage would indicate a battery problem. But you KNOW it is good so it could be the brushes in the starter.

It is a cheapo from walmart but literally brand new! Who has the best batteries? Also you know of someone who will rebuild the OEM Starter and not charge me a leg? Thanks for all your help Coastiejoe!

Oh Coastie In the quick starter test I had it jumped from my Yukon which has about a year old battery, not running it tested over 12.6 if i remember. Would that point us more toward starter needing a rebuild?

Probably yes. The one unknown is the quality of the battery cables and or the connections themselves.

I like to do a voltage test, while cranking, at the battery, I out and output of the solenoid, and at the starter. This test helps give accurate info and a good direction to head.

I may go at least grab another new battery from Advance tomorrow to see if it starts any better. This is all for my kids, don't want them getting stranded up in a cove 5 miles from me.....
