I'm considering the purchase of a 2005 Sea-Doo Sportster 150 with a 155 hp engine and with appx. 115 hours on it. It seems to be well maintained and garage kept, but it has been transported everywhere from Florida to California. I'm assuming the seller is in the military.

Is this a good year for the Sportster? Does this particular year have any issues? What should I look for when I inspect the boat?

Thanks,
Kelly

There are no "Known" issues with non-supercharged 4-tech boats.

If you are ready to put $$$ down on it... take it for a test drive. A boat can run fine on the trailer, but all the gremlins will come out once it's in the water.

Sorry can't comment on the salt water -- land locked lakes here in Alberta although I hear there is a salt water lake in Saskatchewan I should go play on.

That boat has seen some travelling by the sounds of it.
I know from trailering I had some issues with the wake tower on my boat -- if you have a tower look it over for stress cracks although I think they had changed the design by your model year (mine's the 2003 first year 4tec sportster).

Take it for a test drive like Dr. Honda suggests - for all intense purposes drive it like you will own it shortly. It should get up on plane quick (few seconds) and there shouldn't be any cavitation once cruising; neutral should be just that neutral (mine still thinks it needs to go forward and haven't got to adjusting). Speedo top end on a relatively calm lake should get you 50+ with a light load onboard -- less than that (and you probably want to do this anyway) take a flashlight see if you can get a look on the wear ring and impeller -- looking for ring gouges, and impeller dings, etc.

I found one issue by shutting the boat down on the lake and trying to restart, and it didn't start without some manual electrical intervention -- got seller to drop price although cleaning up all main electrical connections seemed to fix the issue :-). Make sure to check all the electrical items -- after i got mine I found things that didn't work due to blown fuses and some that did work only because of over-amp fuses. Live and learn.

I am sure others will chime in regarding other mechanical engine checks -- compression, etc.

Hope all goes well and you join the Seadoo family.
Enjoy,
shamski
