2005 Sea Doo RXT

I have an opportunity to by 2005 Sea Doo RXT with 130 hours on it and new supercharger installed last year. The guy is asking $5,000 for it. I heard many negative things about 2005 RTX.

The 2004 to Mid-2006 4-tec have sodium filled exhaust valves. They are prone to failure as compared to the solid core valves. So, if they have not already been replaced, you should figure the cost into the buying price. This is not a super cheap thing to do. But it is potentially important as if a valve fails, it can easily be a 3 to 4 thousand dollar repair bill...

This, and some timing chains were weak. The valve stems were stamped just above the spring keeper with a production code, remove valve cover and see number to see if the vales are the weak ones. A dropped valve head will lunch your motor so MAKE SURE!

I'm really not sure of the exact timing chain failure, I believe if the ceramic supercharger clutch thrust washer shatters it gets stuck under the timing chain and gear teeth stretching the chain and grinding to little abrasive bits on it's way to the oiling system then potentially through the oil pump and on to the bearings. A broken timing chain results in bent valve stems due to pistons hitting open valves.

When buying any boat or ski in "turnkey condition", a 30 minute minimum water test is highly advisable.
