I had the engine top rebuilt and an additional lanyard switch programmed so we have 2 of them. It was running fine last weekend and when my son went to use it - the battery was low. It beeped but would not turn over.

My son changed the battery and accidentally reversed the poles. We put a newly charged battery in correctly - but now get no beep or anything?

We checked the fuses in the main engine cavity (near the batter) but they were good.

Any ideas before I bring back to the shop (which I would hate to do)

Thanks!

Was it hooked up in the ski while charging backwards? If so, I hate to say it, but that could have easily fried the MPEM. That is why it is highly encouraged to charge the battery disconnected and out of the ski.

He did not charge it while in the ski - just put a newly charged battery in backwards.

Is there a way to check if the MPEM is bad now?

Hi There.
Would you believe I did exactly the same to my ski but it's a 2003 gti with a 717 engine.
It was dead and all the fuses were fine, however i found a black/purple wire that I earth to the battery it turns on a relay in the rear electric box that sends power to the MPEM, then I plug on the Dess key and BEEP BEEP it's alive, I've spent many hours riding it like this but I want to fix it properly.
All the shops tell me that I've toasted the MPEM but since I got it running I don't belive them and think the problem is a fried earth somewhere maybe in the Dess post? please let me know what you do/did, I would love to know what is really wrong with it.

Seadoo sportster 1800

hey i just did the same with my sportster with two 717's in it. hooked it up just before dawn and couldnt see the markings on the batt not its dead! lights n pumps work but nothing outa the dess! im curious the wire you said you grounded where was it goin to? i really hope i didnt fry anything expensive!! there really should be a protector on the circuit! sheesh

The GTIs MPEM is fairly inexpensive. That jetboat on the other hand...could be almost impossible to find.

Typically they will blow a fuse, but sometimes the damage is done before the fuse can blow.

Hey, if it is the mpem, i'm contemplating on gutting the sportster 1800 i got....boats perfect, hav'n tough time get'n title.

A friend and I did the same thing to ours this weekend. We BOTH (yeah yeah laugh it up) put the batts in wrong. In one we just blew a 5a Fuse, the other one, 2003 GTI we can't seem to figure out what happened. Any Suggestions?

Buy a new MPEM.

HUmm, I was afraid of that. How come with the other one we only blew a fuse? They must be wired differently? Also what about what is in under the rear seat . . . some sort of a relay. We were going through it with a multi meter and it seemed there was no power getting through, and if I'm right the MPEM is after all that. I'm new to all this so forgive me if I’m making no sense..

MPEM's can be fixed. Most of the time, the main diode, or power transistor gives up. A fuse may blow... but on old electrical components... it doesn't take much to pop them.

When you hook up the battery backwards... it's about 50/50 on a fuse over the MPEM.

When you jump-start a Seadoo, it is almost always the main power diode that gives up.

Well that’s good news, but does not sound like something I can do on my own. The MPEM on my ski is under the seat, would you suggest I take it out and bring it into a repair shop? Is there a way of testing this to see if that it the problem? I also have a 2001 GTI. Are the parts interchangeable so perhaps I could take the good one out and test the one that is not working? Would that not be recommended?

I'm not sure if they interchange or not. you will have to look up the part numbers an figure that out for yourself.

Most repair shoppes wont fix an MPEM. They will only install a new one. your best bet is to find a used one on ebay.
