So I went to diagnose a customers ski today,

Found first battery was fully dead with only 0.10 volts in it, put another battery in for testing, 15amp charging system fuse was blown 30 amp in rear box was fine, I thought to myself 15amp? thats not right, looked it up and its a 25 amp that should be there as indicated on the mpem, so replaced it then replaced the blown ignition 20 amp fuse? 20 amp? thats not right I thought.... nope should be a 15amp, replaced those both and put key on post and magic smoke came out of ski, I thought to self oh great here we go..... Next test after replacing ignition fuse again advanced diagnostics, 2 short beeps, I then got out of that and still was not getting 2 beeps with key on, thought to self wtf, ok further testing, all of a sudden boom I get 2 beeps when putting key on, thought to self well we are starting to get somewhere now, this is after first thoughts of fuse was blowing from rect or stator but those where fine.

Now that I am getting 2 beeps I try to start many many times and nothing not even a click/clunk, then I get a very quick click from the solenoid then nothing any further so I test the solenoid jumping cranks so then I test and nothing to other side out to starter, now to test the yel/red and black for ground, what the heck the ground shows 12v + at all times and the yel/red shows 6v at all times try to start and you get 7v only, this is with the connector removed from the solenoid, wiggled the harness and no change checked connector at mpem and all connectors/pins look perfect.......

After 2 beeps try to start when pressing start button you would get 1 long beep.

Prognosis.......Bad mpem.....

Shorted mpem and solenoid indicates why the battery was fully charged yesterday and tested fine and today totally dead.

450-900 used for the mpem that a customer was only looking to sell the ski, I stated its prob better to sell without fixing it then, customer did not want to fix it anyways.

Its funny, but this is this first time I have seen this problem so far. I have seen plenty with no start voltage to the solenoid but not any with battery voltage on neg wire to the solenoid.

Customer then did indicate that the ski had been sitting for over a year and he took the battery tender off it would not start so he used a charger set to 55+amp engine start and tried to start it off of that.

A friend of mine did the same thing, he tried to start his ski from a "jump box" he borrowed from a car dealership he worked for. Blown MPEM, he found a new one from a SeaDoo dealer in Fla., cost $800, expensive lesson.

Where did the majic smoke come from?

In all honesty that wasnt a concern at the time, I had no chance to check where the smoke came from it was more important to pull the fuses or disconnect the battery first to prevent a possible fire as this ski was in the garage of a million dollar home, at that point I did not care where the smoke came from I knew it was more important to prevent a possible fire.

I did however check afterwards and could not find where, im guessing the solenoid or the mpem or wiring.

I have came across this many times so far most of them have merely blown fuses. Then I explain to them how to properly jump and charge the ski.

You're probably right, or could have been the main diode, he didn't know, this has been 7 or 8 years ago.
