We have a 2002 Sea Doo GTX DI. This is our first Sea Doo. It was bought used and our first attempt this summer it was bogging down and never got to speed. Then we discovered it was taking on water. Took it to be repaired. The leak was in the indented ring where the head pipe meets the exhaust cone. That was replaced along with the stator, new plugs and a few other things that I can't recall at the moment. This weekend was our first test. We can't go any faster than 35mph and the RPMs are around 5500. It is also skipping too. We have the right lanyard. We put the learner's key in there wasn't much difference. We also had the dealer program an extra key. We tried that one too, still 35mph and 5500 RPMs.

It had been in salt water from what we can tell with the corrosion. One suggestion we've had is to replace the wear ring. We are open to any other suggestions.

Thanks!

Hi ^ welcome to the forum.

the wear ring and impeller is a great place to start.
Check the clearance between the longest part of the blade to the wear ring....should be less than the thickness of a dime.
Also, is the wear ring, impeller in good shape?

That is a good start, however you should be reaching 6800 rpm+ with that engine. I would first run a compression test on the cylinders, and clean the RAVE valves. (the two black caps with blue circles). If that still doesn't fix it, then check the fuel pressure/change the fuel filter. Normally with cavitation (ex worn wear ring) the rpm go up, but the speed stays the same (sort of like a slipping clutch in a car) In this case, you are lacking almost 1000 RPM.

Thanks for the replies. Not sure when we can check on these suggestions, but it gives us a place to start.

Also, I wanted to add that the steering seems very stiff compared to our Yamaha and Kawasaki skis. Is there something that we can lubricate or adjust to make the steering not seem so stiff???

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about the steering yet, grab a compression reading first. These DI skis are extremely hard to trouble shoot. I think the fuel pressure needs to be right at 107psi. Do you have a way to check fuel pressure?

I doubt it is an impeller or wear ring as you have low RPMs.

The DI skis can be NO FUN to diagnose and work on. And they cost more to go them.

One thing that causes low speeds is when the rectifier goes bad. You can disconnect the red wire (rectifier) and see if the problem goes away.

The ski will not charge when disconnected but it will help determine if this is the issue or not.
