Just bought a 2001 xp. In overall very good condition but bogs at takeoff. After patiently playing with throttle i can get it to top out at 40 mph at about 5000 rpm. Dealer mentioned low speed compensation pump or something to that effect. Any idea where that is?

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue, but you'll want to start with a compression test to make sure the engine is within spec. If it is, I'd just buy a new set of carbs $400, and be done with it.

The previous owner said he replaced carbs at beginning of season. They look clean. But wi dont know enough to tell if new or not. I tested compression. However at that time i didnt know to put plug wires on grounding posts and hold throttle open. Kinda new to all this and dont know if that makes a huge difference. But with plug wires off and not touching throttle it was 120psi on both sides.

I'd suggest doing a top end rebuild, 120psi is quite low on both of the cylinders.

The important part is the consistency. 120 may be fine due to varying gauges.

Have you tried new spark plugs? What do they look like?

Have you inspected the fuel filter? What about the filters in the carbs?

Are the jets the correct size?

Are the RAVEs clean?

I will change sparkplugs. I did clean the fuel filter. That had no effect. There are filters on the carbs? And is it difficult to clean the RAVEs?

each carb has a tiny filter.
is the fuel good?

remove the Raves via the 2 hex bolts on each. they slide out, and remove the small air line. do not disassemble above the engine. remove whole assembly, then take to work bench. (so you don't drop stuff).

slide the metal large clip to the side and pop the cap. make note of how it all goes together. Clean it all out w/degreaser. I use a wire wheel on a bench grinder for the rave slider. and just some simple green or brake cleaner on the rest.

I doubt it's the full cause of your issues, but I clean mine once a season in the fall while winterizing.

I put new fuel and sea foam additive in. Ive looked at a couple YouTube videos on cleaning the raves. Seems easy enough. I will try that and new plugs this weekend when i get to the lake house. Thanks so much for the info!

Here we go with the Sea Foam again. Meow.

BTW: 120 psi compression is fine for a 951 as they top out at 130 psi when fresh.

There is no magic in the bottle to fix already old fuel or dirty fuel system. You have to do the work and take it apart and clean it. To treat fuel for storage and/or ethanol I recommend marine stabil.

For some reason people think that SeaFoam is great for everything. For a 4-stroke with a dirty carb it might do some good but there are two issues with it on a ski.

1. The main issue with these older skis is that there are two very small filters inside the carbs that get full of crap over the years and then allow very little fuel into the carbs and engine. This will cause it to run lean and when you keep running it it can starve the engine from fuel and lubrication and destroy it as 2-strokes get their lubrication from the oil/fuel mix. Seafoam and other solvents can't clean the crap from these little internal filters.

2. Seafoam is a good solvent and it will remove the small amount of oil in the oil/fuel mixture and cause your engine to run without proper lubrication on a 2-stroke.

Thank you all for the help. I cleaned rave valves but had no effect. Found a local service shop that got the machine in today. Carbs previously had a rebuild but were dirty. Also not reinstalled correctly. Now was the throttle cable adjusted properly. Everything else checked out. 130psi in both cylinders. 341$ and all is good here in Maine. Again... Thank you all for the info.

Good money spent,,, Sounds like the shop knew what they were doing.

Now go enjoy the ski...

Hi all. So i tested the XP today. The bog at low end is gone. Throttle seems to be working right. However im still only getting a top speed of 45. Any ideas what causes such low top speed? Compression is 130 on both.

Thanks
