Hey People,

I just bought a XP 2001 and the Speedo is not working.. i was wondering if this able to be fixed without a boat mech. Has anyone got any instructions on how to resolve this issue, apparently its common problem. Muchly appreciated :)

Paddle wheel?

On the back, you have a paddle wheel that has a magnet built into it. When the paddle turns, it generates a signal from that magnetic paddle wheel.

What you need to do first is take the two wires off and put your voltage meter on it and spin it to see if the readings vary when you spin it. If so, the problem will be up front where your fuses are............

Hey I was wondering if you have any pictures to demonstrate what your saying... if it has no current then does that mean it needs a new wheel?

99% of the time it is the paddle wheel that has failed. I just replaced mine on my 01 GTI. Took about 15 minutes, very easy to do. Got mine from Parker Yamaha for around $90.

Sorry to be a pain.. but i have located where the paddle wheel is. One end goes into a a probe looking thing and the other to the paddle wheel. I don't know what to test. on the other end where the gauge is, there are two sets of wires, one on the top which is black and purple and beneath that is a purple with a one white line and black. Stuck.. i think i really need visual on how to tackle this. Please help!

Paddle wheel...

The paddle wheel has small magnets in each of the little paddles. When it rotates around that pick-up bar, it sends an electrical impulse. The faster the wheel spins, the faster the pulse.

You can take that plug connection loose and use a voltage meter. Set it to resistance and then, spin it by hand. You should see the meter go up and down in readings from the time it's at rest to the time your spinning it. If you see no resistance changing, then it's bad.............
