Sure hope I posted this in the right spot. I could use some technical help.
Looking at buying a used 1999 Seadoo GSX Ltd from the original (gear-head) owner who is unknown to me. The motor has 135 hrs on it and has never been rebuilt. According to the owner he started having trouble with the machine about 6 yrs ago when he couldn't get the thing over 25 mph. He searched the internet and found reports of similar problems caused by a blockage in the cooling system. According to the owner the blockage causes the engine to reach maximum operating temperature prematurely and then power is somehow restricted. The owner tried to clear the apparent blockage but couldn't access certain areas so he gave up and parked the ski for the next 5 yrs. This past summer he pulled the thing out and (surprise) the problem was still there. Again he tried to flush the cooling passageways but no change in performance.
Any thoughts on cause and cost to repair?
MORE BACKGROUND: According to the owner, compression on all cylinders is good. The unit has been in fresh-water only (not sure that matters?). Apparently it has been stored in a heated garage every off-season until this year when it was moved to an unheated shed. (I still need to ask if he winterized it.) Lakes and waterways here are frozen so I can't test the ski. The asking price is reasonable but not if it needs more than about $500 in repairs, unless he's negotiable!
p.s. - I know a little something about engines in general but have absolutely NO experience with jet skis.
Thanks in advance!
