Hi there,
Just joined up today because I have a problem with my 1999 gti. I have used this site before as a guest with much success and think it's great!. I have looked through the site to try and find the answer i'm looking for this time but to no avail. The problem I have is when I attach the lanyard I have no beebs at all. I then push the starter switch 3/4 times and get 2 beeps and the guages come to life, so start again and nothing, Detach and re attach lanyard and again nothing. I have checked the fuses and this morning fitted a brand new battery and washed lanyard cap and post. The last time I used the ski it was perfect ( thanks to the forum, grey fuel pipe and blocked carb issues), it started, stopped and didn't miss a beat. Can anyone give me any ideas.

Thanks Tom.

Does it crank over? If not you are just turning on the "switched" power. Sounds like your Dess post has gone bad...or the key, but its usually the post. I have many used posts available.

If it does crank over thats a weird issue.

Thanks Minnetonka4me,
I do have power to the gauges after it has beeped after 3/4 times of pressing the start switch, but the engine does not turn over at all. I have checked the manual and followed the test instructions, press the start switch 5 times and then it beeps twice, connect lanyard and press switch again but nothing, no beeps or engine crank. I think it might be the lanyard post and have washed it but nothing. I have in the passed used jump leads to start the ski from a car when the battery has gone flat, how likley is it I've blown the brains?
Thanks Tom.

I wouldnt give up just yet...find the connectors for the dess post and use a jumper to touch the two black wires. It should produce one long beep b/c you are activating the switch w/o key/ohm signal from the white wire

Its not good to do what you did...but its isnt always a mpem death sentence.

Hi there again, Finally I had the time and daylight to look at my GTi. Did what you sugested with a jumper wire and as you said got the long single beep when I push the start switch. What does that prove? is it a way of working out whats up with the electrics? Thanks Tom.

At this point you are looking at a dess post problem or a lanyard problem. I assume you don't have another lanyard programmed to that ski?

I had the same issue with my 96 xp, i cleaned all of the grounds in the rear ebox and replaced the ground to the starter, fixed my problem.

Thanks Chaps, I will look at all the earth connections first and if that fails get another dess post. I will keep you all posted. Thanks Tom.

Yup good point...grounds should ALWAYS be the first place to look before throwing parts at it...but it sounds like a post.

BTW did you jumper that inside the grey box? I just remembered the GTI doesnt have a connector between the two...its hardwired to the box.

It should beep w/o hitting the start button.

Hi Chaps, Just been out in the cold British winter and fitted a second hand dess post and bingo!. I checked all the earth connections and all were good. So must be the dess post, got the new one, fitted and there we have it. 2 beeps and the motor turns.
Thanks everyone for your help and idea's. Who knows this thread may help someone else. Thanks again, Tom.
