Hey guys!

After going out last weekend on a buddy's skis and having an absolute BLAST, I've decided that its time to purchase some. I found a pair of 1999 GSX limiteds with about 250-300 hours about an hour away and I am going to take a look at and potentially purchase them this coming Saturday (6/17).

First, what things specifically should I be looking/checking for in a quick 10 or 15 minute review of the skis? I plan on doing compression checks on both and I have seen warnings about the fuel lines and a leaky exhaust pipe gasket on the 951s.

Second, if I do end up purchasing these, what preventative maintenance would I want to do right away? I consider myself very mechanically inclined and would be willing to do just about any work to them on my own (or with the help of a friend who owns a marina/shop and works on them daily.)

At this point, I'm assuming the fuel lines and gasket have probably been done, given the hours on the machines. The current owners said they have owned them since 2012 and they have been completely problem free, though they only rode them twice last summer then winterized them. When I spoke to them yesterday, they said they pulled them out of storage that morning and they fired right up on the trailer. They did mention, however, that one of them runs at an indicated max speed of 1-2 mph less than the other, which was slightly concerning.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!! Looking forward to getting some quality time in this summer!

Check compression, should be 130 or higher and even between the 2. Thats getting up there with hrs on the engines. Check to see if they were ever replaced. If that passes inspection, I then look at the pump for dings and wear ring condition. Make sure the fuel gauge and vts work on both. Not working isnt a big deal but you can talk the price down. When you get home I automatically change the fuel lines, rebuild the carbs- dont trust the word of anyone when buying, its sad to think that way but a lot of sellers usually just say what you want to hear. I usually pull the pump and change out the carbon seal, rubber boot, wear ring and pump oil before the first lake ride.

+1 pwgsx. That is about the maximum hours that a 951 will last on average. If they haven't been rebuilt I wouldn't expect them to last much longer.

Annnddd the seller just called me to inform me that even though he was holding them for me, he just sold them. Crud. Back to Craigslist I go...

You don't say... Now I'm just trying to find more in my price range. I want to get a pair of them (with trailer), but I'm still trying to stay under $4k. These seemed like a steal for $3k, even with the hours. Suggestions welcome...

A buddy has a 01 GTX RFI that he is finishing putting a 100% new engine in. He is willing to sell for $2500 with a 1 place trailer. Can't decide if that is worth it, given that it is only 1 jet ski.

I was only on those GSXLs because they were cheap. In reality I'll consider anything that fits my budget.

Exactly, it seems a little high to me. I think he said his is actually a '99, which NADA puts between $1,600-$1,820. To his point, it does have a whole new engine in it (not rebuilt - 100% new). And it's not like I'm going to buy it without a trailer...

Mine included the trailer (ComFab). The trailer is worth about $300-$500. The last 2 digits on the HIN, located on the back of the ski tells you the year.

Man, that's two times now. Had emailed with a guy about an hour away about 2 2002 GTX RFIs plus a trailer for $4k, then after setting up a time to meet tonight he pulls the ad down and tells me they sold.

I suppose it is probably a rebuild then - I guess when I say 100% new, I mean he didn't rebuild himself or anything - it was a completely new motor to that ski. Definitely had a new coat of paint on it!

the XP is wicked fun. I like it more than the GSX.

STAY AWAY from any "DI" model.

I've heard that (to stay away from DI). I was looking at a pair of GTX RFIs but the guy never responded to me, so that obviously didn't happen. I'm told the XP is pretty tippy, but that doesn't bother me too much.

it is. Don't expect to ride 2-up. it's tippyness is what also gives it the ability to carve a tight course.

I can easily make myself sick with mine. Left/Right/Left/Right Full throttle. it just carves like nothing I've ever ridden. and it loves to jump.
