It all depends on how it was treated. Just because a ski doesn't have many hours on it isn't necessarily a good thing. It means it sat. Seals have dried out. Fuel sat rotting the fuel lines, carb diaphrams get hard, etc.
And the fact it sat for years, it all depends on if the engine was fogged before storing. If it wasn't then i'd say pull it apart and inspect the crankbearings and inner seals. On a second note, If its sitting on your bench, split the case regardless. Re-seal the case with new end seals. And be sure to inspect the counterbalance shaft bearings. I bought my last ski as a basket case. It was trashed. luckily I know a guy who got me a good engine cheap.
My advice, if your going to keep it, go through everything. carbs, fuel system, cooling system, oil system. driveline (impeller, wear ring, oil, bearings, etc. Do it all once, keep the maintenence up and enjoy it. OR if its just a flip, sure try a top end, break it in properly, still go through the fuel system and cooling system, fix the necessities, then sell it.
I'm part of the group that likes to keep their skis at 100% and i do flip some skis, but i wait for the right buyer who is willing to pay good money for a well kept machine. No matter what I have, seadoo, sled, atv, or weed wacker, i would sell to a neighbor in a heartbeat without the worry of it failing. I wont cut many corners. and the ones I do (ie re-sealing jet pump, I assemble it and do a leak test. if the old seals hold up, i wont replace them) Just my 2 cents
