plug in lanyard and get 2 beeps(normal) and when start button is pressed the engine begins turning over and without releasing button stops 1-2 seconds later and then begins to turn over again every 1-2 seconds . Engine will continue to do this until button is released. any suggestions? Thank you for any help you may have

batterys' dying, bad red cables and/or bad ground cables and connections, or relay is going south. Volt the relay post that has the cable going to starter. When start/stop is depressed it should read 12.5 on that post.

You might look at the stop/start button, I had a problem similiar to yours with my 2000 gti and I had to replace the start button. Its easy to replace and trouble shoot if you have a multi-meter just disconnect wires going to the switch and do an ohm reading across the wires while you operate the switch. Good Luck!

Thank you. I was able to remove the starter switch and temporarily replace it with a friends this past summer, but did not solve problem. Thought for sure it was the problem because it does look a bit worn. Thank you for your time and suggestion.

Thank you. I was pretty much able to rule out both cables and the battery. I'm taking a shot with the solenoid/relay and bought one for $30 on ebay but didn't have a chance to test it just yet. It feels like it is disengaging by just putting a hand on it. Hopefully this solve it. Will let you know how I did. Thanks again

Cranking

If starting system (wiring, connections, solenoid) check out OK remove your spark plugs and rotate your engine by hand. It should rotate smoothly. If it doesn't then the engine or the jet pump is binding.

removed plugs and rotates freely. I just tested the solenoid w/volt meter and the volts were bouncing up and down(0-12volts) so I believe it is the relay. Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions. Will give followup once I receive the relay thru the mail. Thanks again.

Just installed the new solenoid with no luck. engine continues to have same symptom. turns over for about 2-3 seconds, then quits for a second or two, then tries to fire up again all without releasing the start/stop button.
