1998 GSXL stator questions

Finally got to it. Not too bad except for the one pain in the ass bolt behind the front motor mount..

Here's what I found inside, two pieces of metal.

Stator looks like it took some damage from them. Thoughts on how it may or may not work now that the metal chunks are removed?

Lastly, these two bolts holding the plastic piece were a turn away from falling out...I gotta believe they are supposed to be tight. Should they be tightened?

One last thing. I really do appreciate your time and this forum. I wouldn't have attempted this project without this forum as a resource. Thank you all.
 
Yes the bolts should be tight. The pieces you found look like teeth from the bendix that have probably chipped off. I'd look in there with a flashlight and rotate it. The stator took a hit for sure. Good used ones are cheap. There is test procedure in the service manual that you can do with a multi-meter.
