i have a 1997 787 xp when i bought it there was a burnt piston.bought rebuild kit and put it back together.after running it for a while on a hose i took it to the lake it ran fine for about 15 min then it sounded like it would backfire through the carbs once in a while and would lose power.after idling around for a while and not opening it up it would take off and run good again for a while and then it would start doing it again after a while.i changed plugs a couple different times ,changed fuel filter, really cant seem to pinpoint the problem wondered if anyone else has had this problem or knows what it might be. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like youve described symtoms caused by air leakage, between the air
box, carbs, manifold, RV, to cases. Did you use sealant on the gaskets? Try
5 PSI into pulse tube, seal carb at top, apply soapy water to external areas.
Look for tell tale Bubbles. Hope the helps!

Try replacing the voltage regulator. First check the running voltage at the battery, it should not exceed 14.5 volts.

sounds like a fuel starvation issuses
carbs running out of fuel
you can go full throttle for a bit
then the ski will loose power and go to a idle?
after you verifie that the battery running voltage is proper
make sure the o-ring is in place in the fuel filter
next, i would replace the fuel valve
if this does not fix, carbs would be next to overhaul
goodluck

yes it will run for about 10 or 15 minutes just fine and then kind of makes a backfire sound coming back through the carbs and then wont open up you can idle aroung but when you try to give it open throttle again it kind of bogs and then backfires some more.If i can keep it going and idle for a while (after some more backfiring)it might take off and run good for another 10 or 15 min or so and then it starts all over again.,and it doesnt seem to matter if you shut it off and let it sit for an hour and come back it is still doing same thing.really frustrating because when its not backfiring it runs really well. Thanks for any help!!!!!

Bill which gaskets are you talking about using sealant on? I think if i remember correctly i used an anerobic sealant on carb/intake gaskets and really didnt seem like it had any leaks there already had checked. any other ideas? Thanks

Chester i am going to check regulator because another pwc mechanic told me this as well to check voltage cause that could be my issue but if it was low wouldnt my battery be dying or do you think that it could be too high of voltage?thanks for any help

done a compression test right after it started this and checks out good.the carbs have not been gone through yet the ski was supossed to be running good before it burnt a piston right before i bought the ski and fixed it so tying to eliminate everything else first. Thanks

Check the crank index. The proceedure is in the manual. Is it hard starting also?
If so, check the Rotary Valve clearance. Metal Particles in the stator or a broken
bracket can be the cause of the intermittancy. Do the first two as they are a
little easier, you will need to loosen & block up the engine to open the stator
cover, also this is described in the manual. Post results, please. Bill

i will definately try these things might be a while before i repost as we are in iowa (cold and snow now) it is put away for winter but want an idea of where to start as soon as it starts to warm up.Thanks so much

Yes, I think that the voltage is too high. It creates havoc with the ignition system.
