I have replaced the ignition coil but still have no spark. The battery is charged, the starter turns, but I have no spark. Any suggestions? When people say to check the ground, where are they talking about the ground. I know the coil has three black wires in the rear box. Is there a ground outside of the rear box? Thanks in advance, WolfpackRon.

Yes... the rear electrical box has it's own ground. Just check it with a meter to the negative terminal of the battery.

Both front mpem & rear e-box have fuses. Water can get on mpem pins and corrode, non-contact shuts it down. The mpem was placed in a poor location and gets wet from any water in the hull. The rear box gets filled with same water and does not get noticed by owner, and water does same there, and fuse holders corrode internally. Both the coil or starter solenoid can easly succum to moisture, and fail. Pull the screws and clean, hopefully make contact. If the ski battery cables got touched reversed or jump started by a running auto, the mpem may be toast.

Thanks Dr. Honda and Bills86e. I just came home from the lake on Sunday. I will check these things when I get back down. If the ground is OK, what are some other possible problems? I have a wedding on Saturday. Too many interuptions with my lake time. WolfpackRon.

What is a "trigger coil?" Does the 97 GTI have this and if so, where is it located? Could it be listed as another name?
WolfpackRon.

It's one of the high voltage coils in the stator. You will check it across the plug at the front of the engine.

I checked the fuses in the front MPEM and the rear electrical box and all were fine. I checked the voltage of the white wire that connects the ignition coil with it unplugged and it read a negative 1.5 volts. When I hit the start/stop button this voltage changed to a positive number, maybe ~15 volts, though not sure of this number. All the connections to the mpem and in the rear electrical box seems clean with no apparent corrosion. I checked the grounds at the rear electrical box and they were good. Not sure where to go next. Still no spark at the plug wires. How do you check the mpeg module? Thanks for your help. WolfpackRon.

I also have no beeps when I connect the lanyard. However the starter turns but with no spark. This does not sound like it could affect the "no spark" issue. Am I right or is the beep necessary? WolfpackRon.

Solved problem w/ 1997 GTI with no spark. After several checks on the electrical system, We cleaned the three spade connectors on the plug attached to the mpem module with sand paper. We then had a spark. Then after turning the gas switch to the on position, it ran perfectly.

Wolfpackron, Yes, thanks for updating your posts with the solution.
I hope Irene isn't your next problem.
