1996 xp wiring

I found a winter project, it's a 96 xp. The guy wants $250 buck and says the motor turns over but thinks it needs electrical work. He bought it with another ski and didn't mess with it. My question to you guys is.

1- how easy is it to trouble shoot wiring problems?
2- could I just buy a front and rear wiring harness and do you think that may fix the issue?

Now I know with not having very good info on the ski yet it's gonna be hard to help me out. But wiring harnesses are pretty cheap on ebay. Any help would be awesome!

Actually it's easier to troubleshoot electrical problems on an 96XP than most ski's. The reason is most electrical connections don't run through the MPEM. MPEM's are sort of a mystery so in my way of thinking, at least from a troubleshooting aspect the fewer connections to the MPEM the better. Did the owner give you any indications of the nature of the electrical problems? What is the nature of the problem, no spark?

Usually the wiring itself doesn't fail, first check connections, clean and apply dielectric grease.

You will need to download a service manual to get the wiring diagram.

Lou, the info he gave me was he jumped the starter solenoid and got it to turn over so he knew the motor wasn't locked up. Not really sure what that means??

I asked if it got spark and this was his response "I don't know. I never got that far. The DSM or whatever it's called doesn't beep. I got it to turn over by jumping the starter motor itself just to be sure the engine wasn't locked up. I didn't get any further then that" so what do you guys think??

I think you should pick it up for only $250. It's probably worth that in parts if you can't save it but you probably can with help from this forum. Good used parts are easy to come by around here also.

Heck at that price even if you need an entire front and rear ebox and all wiring it is a steal. If it is your mpem let me know I have 2 96 xp ebox's for sale.

Electrical issues suck because there are alot of things that could be your issue. No beeps could just be a dead beeper which is really common. If it doesnt start there is a few fuses in the rear ebox you need to check and in the front ebox on the mpem. If one of the fuses is blown on the front ebox than you most likely will need a new mpem. Replace fuses if they are blown and go from there. Clean all grounds in the rear ebox. There will be 5 on the bottom of the coil all on the same post. Also make sure that on the starter solenoid where you are jumping the machine that the small red wire is on the correct side. People make the mistake of placing it on the wrong post. Also check the small ground wire coming of the rear ebox that goes to the battery, that tends to break off. Also it could be a bad dess post. Check that stuff out. It maybe a cheap fix. Make sure the plug to the stator is in as well. It goes into the front of the motor, it is grey and orange.

Yup JSG has you on the right track. You will not get spark jumping the solenoid like that guy did, but you can do what he did to check compression.
