Hello all ....Cutting to the chase a spring washer fell into my crankcase and caused my brass gear ring to loose 4 teeth....split the engine down changed the gear ....rebuilt engine.....replaced all gaskets all the way to the top.....reconnected all the hoses back to what i think are the right places ( friend has same ski sitting next to mine so easy to check )....reset timiming on the rotary valve 145.6 from mag end cylinder at top dead centre....put carbs back on ....primed the carbs with fuel....replaced spark plugs....engine turns over but will not fire up.....sprayed some easy start into the carb and a small pop and it fired up and ran for 5 secs or so but .....i was controlling the revs....should say at this point i have a spark....i feel its timming but i have followed all the book settings ....is it set at TDC or BTDC ( which i think means BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTRE) i have timmed it from the front cylinder at TDC from the inlet port then marked it 145.6 and placed the roary valve plate back on ....WHATS NEXT.....CAN ANYONE HELP.... THANKS

Do not use starting fluid or anything else for that matter to squirt into the carbs. It contains no lubricant and can easily destroy 2-stroke engines.

Use a spray bottle with fuel/oil mixture.

Someone will have a good answer pertaining to your timing issue.

Thanks lou ....I have seen that clip and it does seem i have ticked all the boxes .......but i still think i am missing something .......

Thanks for the reply....will try the spray bottle with oil ....i did only mist the easy start near the carb air intake .....but point taken

Thanks again

.......

Ok ....so my next steps last night was to try a teaspoon of fuel/oil mix directly into the head via the spark plug hole .....it smoked and went bang....so i feel fuel is being ignited.....i checked the crank pipe to the fuel pump and i have suction.....i then took the plugs out to check them and they are dry !!!!! ....also checked on my friends 800 gtx (same Year) for the timing and it is set to the right mark.....Thats it for my Knowledge ....Please Help ....Thanks

Did you line up the flywheel and magneto rotor properly? The little metal plate on the mag rotor needs to line up with a hole on the flywheel.

Thanks kicker for the reply ....
When i took the mag plate off i marked across the magneto to the flywheel but dont recall any little metal plate on the mag rotor .....
Have a missed something there then ??it all went together with no force ......I thought the mag was for charging???
Any help would be good ....this is the first rotax i have taken apart....Thanks again

I dont have a good picture, but you can see the metal plate ontop of the mag rotor. That plate should be aligned with a hole that is stamped in the flywheel. The hole is not visible in the picture.

Thanks kicker....Good picture .....and i have lined it up as shown....i marked the mag rotor and the flywheel with a marker pen ....across the rotor to the flywheel when i removed it .....I just cannot think why it doesnt start as all i did was change the brass cog that the spring washer snapped .....i have checked what i think is everything .....with fuel straight into the spark plug points it just backfired (almost killing the cat ).....all connections are tight and in order ....my mate has the same ski next to mine and we removed his timing cover last night to check we were right on the timing ....all ok......new fuel and oil ...new plugs went in last night and after trying to start it for 10 mins ...the plugs came out dry and clean ??????....getting pressure from the crank to the fuel pump but it would seem not into the chamber ????? i am at a loss so anything you think i have missed would help ....thanks for the quick reply ;)

Thanks Beano....Just an update for any followers ....When the washer entered the inlet port it cause a couple of deep scars in the rotary valve plate .....these have been sorted out .....also when blowing into the crank to fuel pump hose i heard a small amount of air coming out!!!! poss the combined loss of pressure is causing the lack of fuel in the pots ....hence the not starting .......am going to put the engine back in for the last time tonight .....Will let you all know the outcome.....Fingers crossed.....

Ok ...update ....engine back in fuel now getting to the plugs .....still not starting !!!!!!!!!.....pressure tested the pots ....now pressure is low low ....50 PTO 75 Mag .....Have know idea why this has happened ....new gaskets new rings all set correctly ....at the start of all this the pots tested 170 each ???????????all i have done is change a brass cog ???? NOT touch the carbs just the timing which i have checked and double checked ...anyone know why ...help needed....thanks
