Here the background information- acquired jetski ( 1996 GTI ) said it was winterized 2 years ago, Decided to see if it would even turn over. Got new battery turned over and after a little bit it fired and ran but had some oil coming out of exhaust... Being it has sat for a while I wanted to do a carb job because I know it needed it as I have now found it it has never had one done to it

Drained out the gas( lots of water...) Rebuilt the carbs and installed a new filter as well as gas lines as I have read the gray needed to go. The gas lines have been "purged" to say the gas is into the carb
Got everything back together tonight-the Carbs are getting gas so thinking it isn't this
Also it beeps twice when I connect the DESS.

NOW:
The jetski will turn over and over and over no issue and very strong but it isn't firing, decided to check the spark, It IS creating a spark but it is very weak IMO, pulled the plugs and they are somewhat wet... I know it will run just not sure where to go next, Already cut back the wires and new plugs. Pulled the engine cover by flywheel to see if there was corrosion but nothing there

The engine appears to be very clean and good compression

Thanks for the help in advance !!

I wonder if it flooded with oil due to worn inner crank seals, which has foiled the plugs. Pull them and crank the engine to see if any oil comes out the plug holes.

My 96 gti is sometimes difficult to start, but usually does after a bit of cranking. If you dribble a little gas down the carb throats, does it fire then?

The thoughts on the inner crank seal have definitely crossed my mind and think you might be onto something unfortunatly...

When I crank no plugs in just a little bit of oil is coming out-which does give me indication of a bad seal somewhere but was hoping I could get it up and running... might try putting some gas into the carb and see if I can get it to fire up

What you can do is install a ball valve in the oil line to the rotary shaft which is the large line with the filter on it. Shut it off when the ski isn't in use but remember to open it when you start the ski. It's a temporary fix until the engine needs rebuilt

On my ski, which may be different than yours, the large line with the filter goes to the injection pump. It doesn't have a filter on the line to the RV, although it may need one. If I installed the ball valve I might be tempted to store the dess key around it so I remembered to turn it back on before starting the engine as you say.

Oops! My mistake, the valve goes on the larger line that goes to the rotary valve cavity.

UPDATE: After messing around this weekend I got it to fire- not sure what the cause was.. Took it to the lake so it was circulating water, I have to hold the throttle basically wide open to get it to fire- Thinking its something on the carb not sure what it could be besides the idle it set to low??

Also noticed the fuel gauge isnt working and the red fuel light it on- going to try and track that down this week

Definetly going to plan on putting a ball valve in it this week as well as changing the oil filter. I have a feeling this has never been done based on the rest of the ski

Glad I got it to finally run and run pretty good in my opinion

Thanks for the help so far !!

Glad to hear it! The hard starting is something I am currently fighting on mine as well. It seems to be a fuel delivery problem. It's possible you may have a restriction in the system or you have an air leak. I would advise replacing the fuel selector valve and also check to make sure that the oring on the water fuel separator isn't cracked or torn. Those seem to be common leak points.

Haven't touched the selector switch- will have to check that out !
Put in a few fuel sep/filter so that should be good to go
Didn't even think about an air leak..
When I let off the gas whole riding it would shut off so I know its something through the fuel system just going to have to track it down

Thanks again for the help !

I've heard some say to try running it on the other setting of the valve to see if it's better, ie run on reserve instead of main, and if it does then the valve is an issue but I've never had to do it. That valve is probably original to the ski and if it's like mine was, it's probably nasty. I cleaned mine but really should replace it, so do as I say not as I do lol

Still not rulling out the selector switch but after talking to a few people I am thinking it might be an adjustment on the carb- They said it sounds like it is flooding it with gas that's why I have to pin WO to get it to start- Going to try and adjust it a little and see if this helps
