1991 GT Won't turn over

I have a 1991 GT that was running great last summer...however on the last day of August, I found that the throttle cable was bad and the oil pump was running full on, without any regulation.

I got a new cable, and thought all I'd have to do was install it, and I was good to go. Unfortunately, I never even got that far, because on a whim I hit the starter button and it just clicked (the engine turns over by hand). I figured it was a dead battery, so I put it on the trickle charge. When it was 100% charged, I hit the starter button again. Nothing...just a click from something inside that white box that sits on top of the battery....

So, I took the top off the battery, and took that box apart, and I've got a ton of wires in there with some sort of whitish glop all over them.

Is one of the things in there the solenoid?

I'm guessing I have a bad ground somewhere, but I'm woefully ignorant of these things (although willing to learn). Where should I be checking for the ground, or trying to test out this wiring?

Prob not...just the solenoid. Put a pliers to the two posts on the solenoid and it should turn over. If it does, its most likely a solenoid.

I have used ones if you need it.

When I touch both posts together, I get a spark....no turning of the engine.

Make sure you jam it pretty good. If it continues to spark and not turn over its the starter.

Yeah...i jammed it in there....nothing. How tough is a starter to change?

Its quite tough the first time you do it. Prob would be a good idea to remove the pipe, but it can be done w/o removing it using long extensions. Yours will be a little easier being its a GT. Two bolts holding the starter to the mag housing, and on the back of the starter there is a bolt holding it to the cases. Pull it out and then take the nut holding the power wire off.

I actually don't even know where the starter is on it. Is it under the big blue tube on the left side?
