10 hour service. $400 for what?

My local dealer quoted me nearly $400 to conduct the 10hour service on my GTI. Said it's 2.5 hours @ $125/hour. Seems crazy high to me.

I know they do an oil change and spark plug change, check the engine bolts, thortle cable, linkage, check steering alignment etc but $400? Seems like most of the service is inspection.

Also, he said they run it on the diagnostic machine. I take it they're looking for error codes. If there were any error codes, wouldn't I get a warning/error reading on the information center/gauge?

Unless your getting some indication of a problem, it won't send any codes. Most dealers automatically put it on the B.U.D. machine to check all the specs like run hours and rpms achieved during break in. It seems to be the cost of doing business now a days is $125.00 per hr. plus parts...Try another dealer to do your service if your not comfortable to have them do it for you.

Yeah, mine quoted me $100 per hour plus parts, and said it would take 1.5 hours per ski, so it looks like i am going to be down about $400 for both of my ski's

Thanks for the responses.

This is kind of what I figured. If there was something wrong with the ski, I would think I would be informed of it w/o having to have the dealer plug it into their machine.

We had contemplated doing the service ourselves but that diagnostic test was the only thing we couldn't do. I don't really care to pay a dealer to tell me what the peak rpm was during break-in. Seems like a waste.

Since my original post, I did contact another dealer that gave me a price of around half to do the service. We might just take it to them.

Sucks, we were trying to give the dealer we bought the ski from more business but I guess it's their loss.

I buy stuff for the lowest price I can find. I take my stuff to the most honest/dependable/ and still cheapest place I can. Which for me means I bought my jetski at one place and am taking it to a dealer on the opposite side of town (closer to the lake) for service because I trust them more, and there service prices are better.

Thanks for the responses.

I think you should call the original dealer and tell him how he drove you away. And that another dealer is half the price. He will have to eventually conform to market price or go out of bussiness.

I actually did that. Made sure he knew we bought the ski from him and told him I'd rather use him for service but just couldn't justify spending TWICE as much for the same service. Offered nothing. Funny thing is, their parts' prices are always cheaper than the other local dealers.
