Really confused about a 99 GTi right now. With a new battery in it, I can't get anything electrical to go. No beeps when the DESS lanyard is put out (I got one long beep early when the old battery was in it, I assume bc the lanyard had been left on, so I think buzzer is good). No spinning over or other action when I hit start. I found two fuses in the MPEM that both checked ok for continuity, and one in the aft electrical both which also check ok for continuity. it has a solid 12v on the red wire leaving the rear box going to the bow, and if I bypass the solenoid it will spin over. The ground to starter checks out ok. Any ideas where on the wiring I can check? It's like I'm losing all power somewhere.....any thoughts appreciated!

They do feel a little worn out, actually. Any idea how I can bypass them or otherwise test to see if the combo is ok?

don't think it is possible to bypass them... the lanyard fires up the computer...if your not getting any beeps...maybe you have a broken wire/connection on the DESS post?
try searching forum re DESS post problems and go from there...

Test the START wire at the solenoid to see if it has 12volts when you press the start button while the lanyard is attached. It is normally yellow in color. But it MAY be any color other than black. I suspect you are not as it cranks when you jump the solenoid. If not, then you need to see if you are getting volts to the starter button once you attach the lanyard. If so, then the start button is defective. If not, the issue is deeper.

Lanyard or MPEM issue assuming all fuses are good.

Coastiejoe... if he is not getting beeps (I know with mine I get a short beep when connecting lanyard...then 2 quick beeps ready to start) would the it still start on starter button? just asking for future reference.. Thanks

A few ideas:

Is this a 951?
12Volts on MPEM BATT fuse?
What is voltage of new battery? I hope not more than 14v, should be close to 12.5 volts, else MPEM damage can occur.
Pushing start button should power on gauges(MPEM wakeup), with lanyard removed.

You also may have a corroded ground for MPEM????

I think this 99 GTi has a 717 engine in it. I've only got experience with the 787s in my 96 XP skis.

Several months ago, I got ready to work on one but it had absolutely no electrical power. Battery was fully charged. I found a blown fuse in the rear electrical box. Replaced it and still had no electrical power. Wasted time checking a bunch of things and finally came back to that rear electrical box. I unplugged the Deutsch connector at the top and found a two out of the six male pins were completely corroded away. Water had intruded and corroded the pins. A new Deutsch connector that I had on hand fixed me right up.

Like I said, I have no experience with the 717s. Maybe they've got the same Deutsch connectors maybe not.

Danny in this case they are the same. It does have the rear ebox.

Since nothing is happening when you hit the start button with no key attached, that tells you power or ground isnt reaching the MPEM. I would first be pulling the plug on top of the rear ebox and checking for corrosion like Danny said. Seen it many many times.

If thats clean then follow the red wire all the way to the MPEM looking for other connectors or maybe a splice.

Id everything checks out there then start checking out the ground. It runs from battery to the motor ground, then theres a ring connector on one of the mag housing bolts that feeds ground to the MPEM. The big ground I think runs under the motor and that allows it to see water and sometimes rot internally. You can run a temp bypass ground from the battery and vicegrip to that ring connector.

Lastly...or firstly...check the connector on the MPEM for corrosion or broken pins.

If the beeper is defective he will get nothing. By doing my test it does not matter unit works or not. My test will confirm certain important things. Such as connections, battery, starter ect ect.

I'm after to see if it cranks at all. Once we get that far we will go for a start condition.

But yes, if the lanyard is attached and all that part/system is working it could start if he jumps the solenoid.

I'm chiming in again since I was winterizing both of my 96 XPs today. After cranking and starting the engine (the ski that I mentioned in post #8) I ran it for a couple of mins on the hose to circulate Stabil treated gasoline. After several starts and stops, I took a break and worked on the other ski.

When I came back to the first ski, I connected the lanyard and got a very, very weak beep. The lights on the multi-function gauge came on for a second then went out. All was dead. I removed the lanyard and reconnected. I got the same weak beep with a momentary light up of the lights. I tried this a couple more times and eventually I couldn't even get the weak beep anymore.

I opened up the rear electrical box and removed the lower fuse. The fuse holder was corroded from water from long ago. I pulled the fuse out and I could tell that it wasn't making good contact. I cleaned everything up and put it back together. I also checked the other fuse but it was clean and making good contact.

Once I reconnected the lanyard, everything was back to normal :D . Make sure that your fuses are making good contact with their holders!!!!!! My fuse holder is in pretty bad shape and I think that I need to replace it or I may be going through this again in the spring.

Hi, I'm really sorry for the long delay. I got really tied up with a new house and baby and had to park the seadoos for a while. Thanks to all for the advice. I will re-check the fuses and connections, although at first glance they looked ok. Just for the heck of it, does anyone know if I could take out the DESS and MPEM and switch in a working MPEM from a pre-DESS model? The reason I ask is because I have a 95 GTX 657x and 96 GTX 787 which both have a working MPEM. I didn't know if that could be a quick check to see if the MPEM on the GTi is bad or not....just wondering. thanks again for the advice.
