did he ever build tour boats? I came in at the end of 2001, and never heard of people running his stuff. Most of the names of race boat builders I heard were Judge, Dupriest, Hedlund, Pops Fish, Miller, Franco, Race Tech, Dean, Les Cook etc..
Definitely will, Damn business getting in the way of fun. Hoping to get the garage cleaned up so I can disassemble the motor. Sorry to get everyone excited it will be a long process. Funny thing is we still have no ice in on Tonka, usually by now i'd have the excuse theres 10" of ice! LOL
Well I finally got the motor disassembled and everything looks fairly good. Well all except the "base gasket". Its a custom made piece made out of aluminum, and its seen better days. Glad I didnt run it like this.
I took the cylinders over to my boring guy to get checked out and see what he thinks, hoping to save the bore size and not have to bore it out.
Also it looks like George put updated rave valves on it but welded half the groove.
The big question I have is now that its apart, Ive been trying to decide if I should have it powdercoated. Part of me wants to leave it as is to preserve it as George had it, part of me wants to go all out and have the whole motor done. The paint on the cylinder totally sucks and the cases and mag housing are really good original paint...Im thinking the best solution is to just get the cylinder painted. My thought is get it done the gun metal grey that the head is finished in. What does everyone else think?
Glad to see you are back on this Nick. Are you leaving this engine in the original hull or transplanting it? If the latter, paint it up. If it is a resto, match the original colors.
Yeah Im struggling with it. Id like to be an ode to George, but in all reality the hull sucks other than for speed runs on smooth water. I should prob do things assuming Im gonna sell it b/c lets face it...I really dont need two 920 machines, but I feel a strong "drag" to bring it back to its former glory.
If you got it from his estate it would be one thing. Seriously the hull was swiss cheese. He drilled holes then filed them with silicone. Did it clean up decent?
Yeah but it wasnt molested either. Funny thing is On the way home from Georgia I stopped in Paducah, KY to rest and it was his hometown. I didnt know until I got home and was going thru some of the paperwork.
Hull cleaned up pretty nice, I bit grungy inside that wouldnt come clean but its not too bad.
Was it trued or anything special or was it just a 96xp he modified? I guess a tribute boat to him would be cool just maybe on a hull that isn't swiss cheese and silicone
As long as the hull is not falling apart, I say use it and keep it intact. The old race scars are not a bad thing. Just vintage. But if you are trying to sell it as a fast ski that no one cares about the history, then swap hulls. Since I don't care about your wallet , and history is cool, I would do a cleanup to where he would have had it back in the day. So keep the old colors, but make it nice that way.
I'd say use everything, even the Swiss cheese. I wouldn't paint anything. Put it back together in great running order, clean the parts. Build a running time capsule. Even if the hull isn't mint it's not like your riding/racing it every weekend.
