Where to put the woofer?

My Bazooka marine sub-woofer came (ebay) yesterday. For those unfamiliar, it's basically a woofer in a tube, about 22" long and 8" in diameter.

I had planned to mount it on my tower BUT the instruction booklet suggests the business-end of the tube should point into a corner.

I'm not willing to sacrifice room in the boat (4-tec 155hp) so the only option would be to put it in the engine compartment?

I can try various spots to see what sounds better, but was looking for some opinions where you guys think it should go.

That probably should have been thought about more before you bought a bazooka tube, you can't just strap those onto something in the open. IT is going to be tough to find somewhere to put it and be able to really get much performance out of it.

I remember that boat Foster. I still don't see how having that sub in there put out enough sound to even make it worth it.

To OP, If it were me I would figure out where you could cut and install a sub or get some good high end 8" tower speakers like the Liquid Acoustics or the Wet Sounds. I think right now the L.A.'s are the better deal overall.

I heard a set of Wet Sounds tower speakers and they sounded fantastic w/o a sub in the boat. The mids on them are crazy good.

Call me crazy, but going from stock to Alpine head unit, Alpine speakers, and a Bazooka woofer - I think I'm gonna be happy.

The woofer is all-white & matches the boat - think it'll look fine on the tower & rock my head. Maybe I'll point it down to bounce off the engine cover, but I just see it's position just a mere detail.

It will be interesting but I am betting you are in for a HUGE disappointment.

I don't get the basis against the bazooka.

I tried it out - just using bungee cords for the moment - in a few different positions spots this afternoon & I'm delighted. Best spot is centre on the tower, pointed down about 30 degrees.

When seated, it's behind you which makes it sound good. When standing in the boat it's good because it bounces off the floor. When seated behind it (on the engine cover) it's still good because it's near your head.

Other spots on the tower also worked well, but didn't look as good. I tried it in the engine compartment - that was a total no-go. The "lift-out-tray" (whatever it's called) is coated with noise-reducing foam to reduce engine noise and that stuff is more effective then I'd realized.

I didn't want to cut any fibreglass, so this is perfect for me. At the end of the day, for about $460 (Alpine head unit, Alpine M-600 speakers and Bazooka woofer) I've got a HUGE increase in the sound on my boat, night & day. It's also phone (aux) & flash-drive friendly which my old head unit was not. I'll add another battery which will add some more cost, but in no WAY am I unhappy with this.

Ever been listening to music & thinking yeah it's OK but there's something missing? Then a woofer kicks in - and you realize oh yeah THAT'S WHAT WAS MISSING! Well, that's what this is like.

The *only* reason I'd caution anyone against this set-up is that the back of the bazooka doesn't look to weather-proof. For me, my boat lives in the garage & get's taken out for day-trips, so that's fine.

Is that thing waterproof or water-resistant? Even though you are going to put it on the tower does not mean it can't get wet?

Several websites claim water-proof. From the bazooka website "Being made of composite waterproof material, there is nothing that will rock your boat.."

To me, the phase switch & wiring harness on the back look like they could be compromised in a rain storm though (when the tube is pointed down the back is pointed up).

I'll probably just cover them with some white tape.
