where do I start?

Had the ski out yesterday and had a great time. My sons and daughters were all taking turns riding as well as the wife and I. I was going to go out for one last ride before we headed back to dock and it would not start. Then one of my sons tells me he had flipped earlier in the day but turned it over the corr3ect way and we had been riding it long after he did it. Got it home and rear cylinder has 0 compression. I guess it could be water injestion, but it also has 274 hours on it, although at the start of the season both cylinders were at 130.

I have rebuilt a 1999 Yamaha 1200 in the past, but I had a guy I was friends with on the riva forum basically hold my hand and walk me through it the entire time. I really do not think I have the expertise to do this rebuild unless someone wants to fill his shoes and take me under their wing to do it.

What are my other options? Looks like an SBT motor would be about $1200.00. Back when I did the Yamaha, they did not have a real good reputation, has it improved? Is there anybody on the site that rebuilds them that may be a better option for me?

I am at a loss as to what to do at this point, not to mention being really bummed out!

sbt is about the same, opinion's vary, I have no issues with them, they sell more machines than anybody that I know of, possibly more than all the other re-builders combined.

SES is an option, 30ish day turnaround from what I read, you might salvage a little bit of summer.

More importantly..... your son flipped a 2001 GTX ?
How is that possible ?
and you should ream his ass out for not telling you until well after the fact.... it's 'possible' that if you had known, and if the engine had ingested water, that the engine could have been saved.
Best way to solve that problem is tomorrow morning, lick his doughnut, and wait to tell just as he's about to take the last bite.

he and his girlfriend are not small people....... He also does not live with me, so licking his doughnut is not an option. I agree, sure wish he had told me, but its done and now I gotta deal with it.

Damn, I have never been able to flip a Gtx. I've gave it my best shot, full throttle 55-56 mph spin and still no flip. Launched me off and I was sore for days but no flip. How did they do it?

Well, he is 5'10 and goes about 250, she is all of 5' and must be around 200. She dang near rolls it over trying to get on in open water! I did not see them flip, I have no idea how they did it.

Had never heard of SES, but thier website is kinda impressive, seems to me they put out a higher quality engine then what SBT does? They are also here in Pa. so shipping should be much less.

well, then SES, considering location, quality is a serious option, and if I was there probably the direction i'd lean.
give them a call.
and I hope your cases aren't fugged up, i assume you haven't pulled the motor yet.
note: you'll need some tools to get that done, exhaust wrench, ball socket hex for starters.
while its out might be a great time to clean out the inside really good, detail the outside, pull the pump and inspect carefully.
give it a good once over, no better time than when engine is out and your weekends are now free.

after thinking about it for a while, can somebody tell me how to know if I lost that cyl to water injestion? I had no deposits on the plug, it looked just like the other one? I am wondering if I may be able to get away with pulling the jug and putting new rings on maybe??? (if I am dreaming, tell me so)

If they flipped it over the wrong way, it would have been hydro locked and not started after. If it was done right then no problem.

Usually it's hard to have absolute zero compression unless there's a hole in the piston. With 274 hours on the original 951 I'd say you got your money's worth out of it. Sbt can have you back in the water in a week or two.

Both companies stand behind their work, I would go with whoever has the best warranty and the lowest cost (shipping included). I have heard that SBT engines make a bit less power than an original rebuild due to less aggressive squish band in the head.

I would have a poke through the rest of the engine to determine what went wrong. Perhaps pull the heads and inspect the pistons for damage/ make sure both pistons are moving up and down. If you have a hole in your crankcase you may have to look at who repairs cores for less etc.
