What's the difference? 50:1, 54:1

I was sitting here trying to calculate how much "just in case" oil to premix into my fuel tank for the first run out this year, and after crunching numbers for about 5 minutes, I came up with 50:1 being 69.12 oz of oil into a full tank of gas.

I have 1 gallon of oil so I was trying to calculate how much of that gallon to use, trying to be precise because everyone on here is so adamant that you precisely premix, then I thought to myself, wait, 64 oz is a half a gallon. How much easier can THAT be to measure out? And that comes out to 54:1.

And since this engine runs a variable amount of oil through the injection system, and I just want to put a little more in there, I figured "What's the difference?"

So, those of you who run 32:1 pure premix (no injection system), how serious is it to run EXACTLY 32:1? What would happen if you accidentally put in 30:1 in one tank?or 36:1? (Yes, i understand that one digit change at 30:1 is almost twice that at 50:1.)

So anyway, I am dumping a half gallon into the tank for the first run out this season. Hopefully this weekend.

The recommended target is 40:1 on our engines.

The break in oil is 50:1, plus the injector giving about a 32:1 ratio.

Since this is "Just in case" oil... how critical is up to you.

Either way... I would go to your local motorcycle shop and buy a "Ratio-Rite" mixing cup to measure it out. (The are handy around the garage anyway)

Remember... you are on a variable injection system... so the final ratio the engine will receive, will be changing with the throttle anyway.

One last thought. If you are going to be running oil in the tank, along with the injection from now on... I would go one heat range hotter on the spark plugs. (keep them from fouling) If this a "Just checking the system" thing... then don't worry about that.

Honistly... if you are that worried about it... remove the injection. OR... better yet... replace the small lines, and bleed them. At idle, and holding the pump arm up... you will see the oil pulse about an 1/8" every second, until the lines are full. If they do that... your system is working.

You're still using the injection system and you want to add more oil for your first trip out? If so, I would go leaner on the mixture than 32:1 or as Dr Honda says, grab a hotter plug or extra plugs because that might be heavy.

As for just pre-mix conversation, I have no regrets going to pre-mix. I ran 32:1 all last summer on my new engine with no issues. I'm going to bump it up to 36:1 this summer. I don't mind being a tad heavier on oil. With carb settings being good, I've had no plug fouling issues and piece of mind my engine is getting lubricated.

Doing the math is easy but I have one of those jugs that have all the mixtures on it for easy measuring.
