My Ski's are 2004 GTX 4 TEC with 50 hrs on them, I purchased them used and want to change the oil.

Manual says to use any 10-40 wt API SH,SG,SJ oil I'm thinking Castrol GTX 10-40 wt, any suggestions besides over priced Sea Doo oil.

don't go cheap use BRP oil no one else makes oil that is the same I have the same ski with 375+ hrs always used BRP STILL RUNS LIKE NEW

What additives would BRP oil have VS Castrol GTX or Amsoil or Mobil 1, I'm just curious, I'm not doubting you and I appreciate your comment but i'm struggling try to understand if the manual states you can use any 10-40WT API SH,SG,SJ, which have all been superceeded by SM which are far superior then why not.

SG,SH,and SJ oils are from the late 90's in 2004 for my GTX that's what was recommended, just would like to understand why BRP oil is better.

Not sure what's different but I have used Mobil 10w40 and it was sluggish and lost 500-600 rpm on top. Sucked that out and replaced it with BRP oil and went back to running good. And no wasn't overfilled. I'm not exactly a noob when it comes to oil and 4tecs. From then on nothing but BRP oil for me. To each their own.

4tec engines are designed from the factory to run off of BRP oil.. brp doesnt design them to run optimally off of castrol or any other type oil.. can you run them off different oil?? sureeee i ran my 2 stroke off the crapyest oil i could find... but will it run the way its designed and be properly maintained? (the way to ensure our machines last).. not so much

i think its that and, more of the quality of ingredients used that are put into the oil.. not saying castrol is crap.. but brp oil is specifically designed to run our brp machines..

Thanks so much for your replies and giving me a bit more insight into BRP oil, I'll follow your advice and go with the liquid Gold...lol

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question

XPS is made by castrol (i've confirmed this by looking at the barrels at an ex brp dealer) apparently its GTX with some additives supposedly added to it. There are some pretty hardcore seadoo'ers that I have read about that have been using the Castrol GTX oil with no issues. I'm using xps but I won't lie its tempting when you see 4L of GTX on sale for 15.99 and I'm shelling out 54.99 at the dealer for xps which I've read is damn near the same thing.

I did a ton of research today on this decided to go with Valvoline Motorcycle oil Valvoline VV740 Talked with a bunch of folks that have been using it for years in their GTX SKI'S with no problems at $3.99 a quart can't go wrong.
meets all of the requirements of that the manual states to use 10-40 wt API SG, SH, SJ

Valvoline 10w-40 4stroke motor cycle...catch it on sale at crackauto for $2.99 been running it in mine for years....refuse to pay $16.00 a quart for a pretty yellow bottle and a co. logo.

No matter which 10w-40 you use...make sure it's wet clutch applicable.

Thanks man I appreciate your candor ....lol almost spent the money on the liquid gold, lot a dudes out there running this stuff with no issues, many for years like yourself.
I had the same problem with my Harley, was a bit worried about getting away from Harley brand oil because I got hung up on the fact that I didn't trust the other manufactures with my baby, finally bit the bullet now running Mobil one V Twin never looked back.

you will be using a oil that is design for engine which 8000 rpms and is not design for supercharged engines but go ahead roll the dice
