Im looking to buy something for around 5k..

What im looking for is something that can hold a few people+ possible pull someone..

What years/models can I afford at this price?

Thanks!

here in CA you could get a nice 3 man only a couple of years old with a trailer...lots of repoed units available...unfortunately. Or 2 older units on a tandem trailer...or an older...2002 or 2003 speedster seadoo boat for that price...good luck and enjoy the summer!

Being this is in the boat section, I am going to figure skis arent what you are looking for. For 5K you should be able to find a 94-99 boat and have a few bucks for mods. The earlier 14ft boats will easily be in that price range. The 98-99 speedsters are usually a bit more but I have seen them under 5000 before. You may find a newer boat for that, but 2000 to 2003 you are dealing with merc motors, I would shy away from them. Then 2004+ would be the 4 tech boats. They are great but will cost a lot more if you have problems. I would stick with 94-99 2 stroke boats.

Looks like you are from Birmingham AL. Doing a quick search on CL didnt turn up a whole lot in AL or TN. A few that were overpriced. Here is a nice Sportster 1800 for $4500 in Atlanta though.

Thanks man I really appreciate the help!
Let me know if you find any other deals.
Tomorrow I'm going to take a look at a 1999 seadoo 140hp gas limited with power trim. He's asking 2.6k, what do you think?

I bought my 2001 Sportster LE 130HP last spring for $6000 CDN.
Make sure to do a compression test on the engine and try it out on the water.

I bought my 98 Speedster in need of some new seats for 4800 a couple weeks ago. I know he wanted closer to 6000 but settled after trying ebay and people not coming through. That was in Florida.

sold!

look at mine if you like it 4800 cash ...i just added new wear rings and jet pump rebuild and new hydroturf going in today!

I'm new to these types of boats. I am looking at a 96 challenger with the 787. It starts right up. Only thing wrong is the back seats are a little worn. The guy just replaced the wear rings seems to be well maintained. He put a stereo and 4 speakers in it. I got him down to $3800 is that a decent price? He will take me out in it before I hand over the money. I looked at a 97 with a new motor with 5-10 hrs but it was dirty and most likely abused owned by a young guy it also did not have a cover. He wanted 3700. Should I be concerned with the 96 since it is the original motor?

You should do a compression test on each cylinder. For that money, it should run flawlessly. I don't know anything about the 787 motors but any boat as old as a 96 might have motor/compression issues if it has seen a lot of use or abuse. Let us know what you find. See what extra stuff the seller might add such as extra 2 stroke oil, vests, covers, toys etc.

Do a compression test on the engine to make sure it is still running strong. It is easy to do and you can buy a tester for around $30 or so. Dont be concerned with the year, the condition is more important.

Thanks for the replies. It does include 2 covers, vests, bumpers, and a tube. Like I said it seems like the guy took good care of it so age is not a huge concern. My wife works with a guy who has the 787 in his jet ski so he said he knows the motorlike the back of his hand. What kind of number are good for compression and how do u check it.

Think about it, you have an old boat in good condition with original equipment. THEN you have an old dirty boat with new equipment. There is a reason why the original equipment still work...because he took care of it. There is also a reason why the other guy had to replace the engine....because he was hard on his boat and didn't take care of it.

I would go for the one with original equipment IF it passed the compression test.

Compression in perfect condition is 150 psi per cylinder. From what I have read anything below 130 means engine requires rebuild. However more importantly is the diffference between the 2 cylinders. If more than 10 psi or so (I think??) difference then the other cylinder will be compensating and engine will fail shortly.
Search around for compression test. The procedure is simple, I just dont recall if it should be done on Hot or Cold engine??

I think the minimum compression is a bit relative, one of my 787's has 125psi in both cylinders and runs just as strong as my newly dropped in SBT. Having said that, the most important thing is that both cylinders are close in PSI to each other.

Ok I will look into it and do a compression test on it. What about $3800 is that too much that seems to be an average price here. He was asking 4300 which I thought was too much. I saw one for 3500 but it says it has a 720 motor.p

$3800 for a single 787 boat is more than I'd pay but that is juts me. You can always look at other boats of the same model/year and see what they are going for and that way you can find the "real world sale value".
