Wear Ring Removal Woes

Trying to remove the wear ring on a '95 XP and it's being difficult. The one in my pump is a soft rubbery material and not a hard plastic. In all the removal videos I've watched, they come out fairly easily once you collapse it on itself and no residue is left.

This one is literally adhered to the inside of the pump. Any tricks to help with removal? I've already tried heating it up a little. If not I'm inclined to think I need a new pump. What a waste of time for a simple job.20230825_130540.jpg
 
That is the OEM one which is the best.
You need to cut the fiberglass ring that is under the rubber in two places about 1/2" apart. Then use a screwdriver to pot the 1/2" piece out and that will relive the tension and the entire think will fall out.

I really need to make a How-To on this....
 
Shit, so I didn't cut into the old one far enough? I was worried that hard part under the rubber was the pump.
