Water regulator

Hi all I have posted a previous thread describing how my 99 gtx 951 with full rebuild 10-12 hours approx running time done) and full carbie rebuild was not reving past 4500 rpm at WOT.

Cleaned raves..... but the fault seems intermittent. Ski runs great for a couple of outings 2 hour run times up to 6800 rpm then will rev at WOT to 4800.

Got some handy advice off here ....someone suggested to check the water regulator.

So checked the water regulator and noticed that the hole where it screws into the water box or muffler was half closed with general gunk. Could this be the problem??? have since cleaned it out.

Also checked the water regulator for a cracked bellows and saw that the spring was broken. 2 rings had broken off. I stretched the spring to approx length...but then found out that the water regulator is calibrated.
I have not toyed with the red screw AT ALL. But by slightly stretching the spring I may have stuffed the calibration.

I've put it all back and ran the ski on the trailer( with hose) and the rpms have come back. However I have not run it in the water and I am scared to melt exhausts and heaven forbid my new rebuilt motor.

Does ayone have an idea of what I should be doing .i.e get the spring for the water regulator? And how would the spring break?

Calibration?

Each water regulator is calibrated when it leaves the warehouse.

Stretching the spring is a no-no and it's now, broken. You can't stretch a spring and maintain it's function.

If you have a new motor and want to protect it, I'd recommend gettin a new spring (if they sell them seperate) or buy a new water regulator. All you would have to do is pop the old one off and put the new one on. I think I paid just over $100 bucks for a new one last year.:cheers:

Setting of red knob on water reg.

Should the red knob on thh water regulator be turm flush with the top of the rave lip?

You can adjust the red knob. All the way in will give you better acceleration and all the out gives better top end.

Thanks for all your quick responses and different suggestions, reall appreciate it. Bought the new spring and have adjusted according to other threads. Could the regulator really be the culprit of only being able to reach 4800 rpm at WOT?
I mean how often have you more experinced guys come across this problem?

It may not be the SOLE culprit, but it is contributing to your lack of performance. Pull your RAVES, and give them a good cleaning, as well.
