Uneven wear on carbon ring

I have a 2001 gtx and took in some water last time I had it out. After taking a look I noticed my carbon ring was smoked. Any idea what would cause it to wear this uneven? My driveshaft seems to be straight as I rolled it on a flat surface. There are some chips in it from being old and salt water corrosion. I've had the ski for a few years now and never had any issues with it.

Last year I had a shop put in a new steering cable and the first time out it took in water and I didn't ride it sense. It did seem a little boggy that time and then when I shut it off it wouldn't turn back on so I'm assuming something got wet and shorted out (haven't started tracing that problem yet). I also noticed a oil rag was wrapped around the carbon ring/boot so maybe that's the culprit.

I also noticed my wear ring was in real rough shape. I had a hard time unscrewing the impeller as it was catching on the sides but finally got it out. The impeller seems to be okay still if I just file down the edges a little.

I'm just now getting some free time to start working on this and figured I'd ask for advice. Also plan on changing the bearings and rebuilding the jetpump/wear ring, etc. Here are some pics of everything

Any advice would be great thanks!

Your engine is completely out of alignment so that has to be aligned (check your mounts), you're impeller has seen better days but could just be filed on the rough edges, the wear ring is smoked and has to be replaced and your pump has taken on water internally by looking at the milky oil in the bearings and needs to be rebuilt.

The carbon ring could be worn from the rubber boot not being on straight or the engine out of alignment too.
The impeller isn't horrible and can be cleaned up with a file. The wear ring is shot.
OSD seadoo has a nice heavy duty carbon seal kit for $55.

I'm betting engine is out of alignment. Check it while the shaft is out. And as mentioned, make sure you don't have a broken mount.

I checked the motor mounts today and they seemed to be fine. I noticed there were some metal shims under the mounts already and was wondering if that comes like that from the factory or if it's been adjusted before. Does the loosen the rear mounts and crank motor over method work for realigning the motor? I never noticed any major vibrations while driving so I'm not sure how the motor would of gotten unaligned. Maybe the oil rag that got wrapped around the boot and shredded everywhere caused the carbon ring to move and wear uneven? I'm trusting your guys judgement I just wanted to share that additional info. Thanks again!

I'm also almost tempted to just suck it up and buy the solas impeller to increase performance sense all my riding buddies have sc and newer skis. Is the different day and night with this impeller? Where would I notice the difference the most? Acceleration, top speed or both? Thanks

To properly align the engine you need an alignment tool. One of the Mods here Coastiejoe has one he rents or you can buy one and try and sell it on craigslist. If you're on the island I'm sure many guys have one. Not sure how far you would be from manolocross but I think he has one and might only charge you a nominal fee to align it. You can't just let it flop like a fish and hope that's right. Obviously someone has it wrong already. But to adjust it you do use shims that are available from SBT for cheap. That wear is from years of rubbing. As far as the impeller, yes you may get better performance but it's not going to be night and day, still a worthy upgrade but don't expect break neck speed gains.
