Just got a 96 Challenger ( 14' single engine) I want to use ite downs but i am afaid of damaging trailer / boat.

Do you recommend using them? How many should be used and where do you position them?

1500lb boat - what weight limit staps should be used and any recommendation where to get them ( Sears, Home depot, etc)

Thank you for any assistance!!!

I would use 2 straps in the stern and the one of the winch with a safety chain/cable attached.

Watch out for straps with a lot of exposed metal that could scratch the hull. Most of the better one have a fabric piece that can wrap around the metal clasps. You don't really need the ratchet types, the ones that "fold over" to tighten is fine. Most of the hooks are plastic coated.
I put mine on so the metal clasps are between the hull bottom and the trailer so not to damage the hull.

Look around and see what catches your eye. Try any auto parts store, Sears, Home Depot, Lowes or Menards or even a trailer shop.

I have a 95 speedster and use 2 straps in the back attatched to the loops on the boat for this purpose. On my trailer there are holes next to the tail lights and also in about the same area above them on the boat. My straps are ratchet type and I keep them lubed up well so they don't corrode but the kind that you pull to secure would be plenty. It's just to keep the rear of the boat from bouncing on the trailer. I also use the safety chain on the front just in case. Of course use the strap on the winch to keep things in place on the front.

Happy boating!

Don't tighten straps down to tight that are going over the rubrails.Release them as soon as you can because they are a type of plastic, they can be distorted. The wider the strap. The less chance of biting in to anything.Mine is a 2500kg strap that is 2 1/5 inches wide that I used to use on the truck to tie down loads.$14 and I only do it up 2 clicks.Nothing ever moves.
