So debating doing these myself on my sportster 1800. I have the pumps off already and have access to the impeller tool but have never done this repair before. The shop says that if I drop them off in the morning, that they can have them back to me around lunch time. What do you guys suggest?

To replace wear rings myself or pay someone????

I suggest you do it yourself! Believe me I was skeptical too in some repairs, Im so proud to tell you that I fixed my own Reverse Shift Cable! It felt so good! So Im going to be diving in to repair my own wear ring, impellers, and my own carbs!

well here is the dilemma, The old wear rings are non existent. There are only bits and pieces of black rubbery/plastic substance still around the impellers. Also one of the impellers doesn't look so hot. Not terrible but definitely not in good shape. If you were going to replace the impellers while doing this job, would you upgrade and what would you upgrade with? It looks like no maintenance has ever been done on these impellers or wear rings so I am thinking of overhauling the whole set up. I have heard of people using a newer style impeller for better performance, anyone ever tried that? thanks

I would recommend doing them yourself and saving the bucks on labor especially since you already have the pumps off. Dr. Honda put together some very easy to follow instructions. The only thing I would add to his instructions is to put the new wear ring in the freezer for about an hour before you install it. I read this on this forum sometime back and tried it out, let me tell you there was no hammering on the new ring at all, it just dropped into place. Let it warm up on it's own for about 30 to 40 minutes and it seats itself very nicely.
went ahead and got the old ones out. Was way easier than I thought it would be. I took a flat chisel and hammer and cut a slit in the ring and it popped right out. The new rings will be here tomorrow so hopefully they are the right ones and I can be back on the water on Friday. Thanks for the replies, I'm so glad I saved the $250 for this job. I would have kicked myself had I paid it and then saw how simple it really was. I have about 45min in the whole job right now. I'm guessing with the new rings and putting the pumps back in I will have about an hour and a half in the whole thing.
Change the pump oil while you're at it..
