Timing Questions.....

97 gti

New Member
I have a 97 gti, one of the bolts broke on the stator assembly and tore up the hole assembly, and the flywheel. I bought a whole new stator assembly, and got a 94 xp flywheel. I put it all together and it sounds like it wants to start but wont. My question is, will a 94 xp flywheel work in place of a 97 gti flywheel? Oh and if I didnt make markes when I pulled off old one how do I get the timing back?
Thanks in advance!!!

The 94 XP has a 657x engine, and your 97 GTi has a 720 engine. The flywheels isn't compatible with the 720 electronics.

It's possible to mix parts... but you have to use ALL of the electronics and flywheel from one or the other, and since you are probably using the electronics from the 720 engine... you will need a 720 flywheel.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!!! If I get a 720 motor flywheel and put the stator assembly on the center marks, will that get me close enough for engine to fire, and be able to adjust the timing accordingly? Way wrong spelling!! Thanks again.

Yes... it should start if you put it on the marks.

Since you are checking timing... and since you will be waiting on a new flywheel... double check the rotary valve timing.
