Thrust bearing

This might be a stupid question but i am putting together a 1997 XP 800 engine that i did not pull apart and was wondering if the thrust washers that go between the piston and the con rod are really necessary as i cant find any for sale. When i bought it it had no wrist pin bearings and only one set of thrust washers but i have some wrist pin bearings from my 720. They are the same except i believe they are wider and the thrust washers dont fit with these. Can i just use the 720 wrist pin bearings or where can i get thrust washers from? Cheers

The thrust washers are only used with the OEM loose needle bearings. If you are using aftermarket caged bearings no thrust washers are used.

so even though the piston has a lot of side to side movement it will be fine?

Yes as long as you used caged bearings.
