Thinking of buying a 1996 GSX

Thanks for the input. I am thinking that $500 is too much. I buy all my parts from the US and a SES rebuild is about $1k. Just wondering about the year, are there any problems with that year and ski? It has a 787 engine.

Thanks.

Not sure if the 96 gsx was the same as the xp with the non serviceable cb cavity, which is a ridiculous design. Just look out for that, because if the engine ever gets wet, you won't be able to change that oil without taking the cylinders off. But I love my 97, I would imagine there were very few changes between the two years, maybe aside from the cb cavity fill.

I was a bit worried about having a non serviceable counterbalance shaft cavity. I guess I could modify it to make it serviceable. Also the electronics are the old style with everything stuffed into the Grey box. Not sure if that is good or bad?

Yeah I just did it to my xp, kinda did a hack job but it should be better than nothing. There is a post about another guy here that did an awesome job with it, better than the factory did. I was jealous of his work.

Well I offered the guy $400 and he wouldn't go for it. One thing that I did not mention was that I would have to take the ferry to go get it at a cost of $70, so I think my offer was fair. If anyone sees any good GSX's in the Seattle area send me a note. Actually easier to go to Seattle than where this ski was at. Bad weather is just starting and I am sure prices will drop even more.

Have a great day,

Rob.

granted it would be nice... but my two cents is don't even think twice about the CB shaft, you'll blow the top end or the crank LONG before your CB shaft dries up.... absolutely nothing to worry about, when the engine eventually falls on its face, then make the adjustment.

I love the gsx, The xps I have are fun and the gsi is a nice cruiser but the best of both worlds is the gsx

Goin to pick it up today. The guy upsold me, gave me a great deal on a double trailer, the GSX and a 1999 Yami. Will post some pics when I get them.

Robj - 96 GSX is a good ski, you will enjoy it if you get it.

parts guys - any chance of getting just the plastic cover for the VTS housing? one of the tabs is broken off of mine.

Sent one free months ago, never heard back from the guy. I didnt even charge shipping. Your welcome. Guess his pm is broken

Here are a few pics of the ski that I got. The motor for the gsx was shot, had a hole in the piston. It is at SES getting rebuilt. Can't add them from my phone, will do so tonight.

Obviously the 787 upgrades are good, but dont make it a make or break deal like Spim said. You gotta swamp the chit out of it to get water all the way to that cavity.

The other upgrades from 96 were a heat treated (blued) flywheel, and the pickup has an improved bracket. The HUGE downgrade is starting in 97 on some motors...they quit cutting the square out of the snout of the crank for the oil pump shaft thing to stick into, opting for one that goes over the nut. I have seen WAY too many of those shafts get chewed up and fail...esp SBT replacement ones. The word is the SBT ones plastic is too brittle.
