Temp sensor disconnected

Hey All,

I picked up a 97 SPX (800) and the engine looks to be in good shape. Strong compression however I have yet to take it out on the water. I did notice that the temp sensor is not wired into the (from what I assume) the MPEM. It starts and runs fine, but I can't find anything that shows me where it should be wired into, and what the wiring looks like.

Do I really have to worry all that much? If the cooling system is returning water should I be concerned?

Anyone know where I can pick up the wiring and the location of where it plugs into?

TIA!

Dan

Thanks, Iggy. This may be a dumb question, and please excuse the ignorance as this is my first ski....yet to ride it even....but what is the buzzer? Is that the thing that plays the audible beeps?

Yes... the buzzer makes the BEEP BEEP when you connect the lanyard, or it should... if it's making noise when you connect your lanyard it's good to go.

If you aren't getting beeps... to find the wires *** TO THE BUZZER*** If you look under the hood at the wires you should find a connector with purple/tan and tan/black. They are likely dirty so they may not look like those colors by now, but both should have a stripe on them and go up under the hood through the hinge (not 100% sure, i am guessing from my GSX and the wire diagram). It will be a 2 connect weather pack connection. (Google Delphi weatherpack if you don't know what they look like). It will run to the front e-box. To test the buzzer you can hit the start button with the key off and within 15 seconds ground the temp sensor wire that goes to the motor. *** Never mind, your temp sensor was disconnected, so it may be that it has gone bad and is permanently shorted out already... you may just hook it up and start your ski and it will beep... I have a 95 sportster that does that (sounds the alarm constantly) where my solution has been to disconnect the temp sensor. It's probably worth hooking the sensor back up and seeing if it works... if it constantly alarms after a cold start it's probably the sensor that is bad.

I would test the sensor first... You can wire it up right later.... But with a bum sensor you will just be hooking up a constant alarm....

BTW... There are ways to test the sensors by hooking them up and putting them in hot water.... I forget the temp at which they alarm but if you bring it slowly to a boil it should ground out and close the circuit and that would sound the alarm.

Well after all this I found the wiring and it was just dangling above so I just needed to pull it out a little. Yes, I will give the sensor a go to make sure it works before heading out onto the water.

Thanks again!
