supercharger detonated

SC on rxt 260 failed, killed gear on inside of pto housing.is this the ring gear? not sure which gear this is but I can feel damage from outside.does starter run on same gear?she has only 64hrs and dead.

No, they are not the same teeth, there are two rows of teeth on the flywheel, one row for starter, one for SC.

Why do you ask? Engine needs total tear down anyway to clean it out and flywheel and timing chain replaced.

thanks for info,i am just about out with motor, allready intended to clean out motor,at least bottom end and oil screens.why would you change timing chain?i'm three motor mt bolts from getting it out.SC has small contact on housing, but blades look good enough to just rebuild.i was curious about flywheel, have not been in there yet.

Metal chunks/bearings nick the timing chain and damage it. Many fail if not replaced after problems with the supercharger.

Is this the same sc being discussed a while back? Crusing along and stopped dead?

Have you pulled the sc and opened it up?

Why?....what exactly caused the failure?

These sc need rebuilding every coupla three years. The bearing cages get brittle and fail...allowing touchdowns. Will do everything you mentioned in the first post way back when.

Assuming everything stayed in the housing....you, trying to start the motor repeatedly with an sc out of alignment would cause damage to the flywheel.

Just curious.

yes ,same SC from last week, bearing cage is gone into engine,SC bearing went, shaft dropped out of line, bearing locked up on shaft and teeth on flywheel broke, instead of teeth on shaft.HINT to everyone out there,if you notice starter dragging,or hard to turn over,it very well can be your SC.i thought I had battery issue or starter going bad,i thought I was ok with SC,with 64 hrs.did not know about two year rebuild.did not run engine hard enough to notice rpm drop.you guys have really helped me out with my problems, thanks a lot!

Yup inspect the charger housing and wheel closely. Might be safer buying a used charger and rebuilding that one though.
