Storage Compartment Gas Shock

I'm the 2nd owner of a Seadoo Speedster 150. The gas shock that holds the front compartment open really doesn't work.. the compartment lid falls right back down. It needs to be replaced. The original owner told me the gas shock was never really sufficient anyways and he complained to the dealer who told him "that's just the way it is".

I need to get this fixed. Does anyone know of an aftermarket shock that might work a little better and or come cheaper? It is part 19, below (SKU 204620322), and available for around $33.

storage compartment shock

Just bought a 2003 sportster with the same issue. The aft end of the shock threads into the eyebolt so there is some adjustment. You can screw it out to make the shock longer but in my case, with it holding on by 2 threads, it still is not enough tension to hold it open in a good wind. I ordered a new shock and will post the results. I,m guessing it was a bad design.

Throwing out your money...

Usually, when someone wants to fix somthing, I'm more than willing to help out. But, you kinda hit the nail on the head. It's a bad design. With all the boats I've worked on, I don't think I've ever run across one that actually held the cover open. If your on the trailer, no wind, then yes, it'll probably hold it open till you bump it. When you get the new one, it'll probably hold up for a little while, maybe one season, but it'll weakin pretty quick....unless they have finally made the replacements stronger. That's possible.......

Alright so bad design it is.. I haven't tried adjusting mine, but I will. I'll get some measurements on this little sucker... I would think that there ought to be some little gas shock out there for a different application that would work a helluva lot better. I thought about adding a spring too.. but haven't come up with a solution for that was not ghetto.

New gas shock

I just replaced the gas shock on the front storage compartment with a new part. The new shock has at least 2 or 3 times the resistance of the old one and is holding the top up quite well. We shall see how long it lasts.

I busted both struts on my 1997 challenger 1800.
Went to the nearest autoshop(supercheap) bought two struts for the rear hatch on a mazda 323, fits no probs, not sure if speedster 150 is the same but worth your while to check! cost me $50au to replace both.
Only problem is they are a bit too strong and i nearly have to jump on the hatch to close it.:)
