Stock Intake grate vs no intake grate

I have a 97 XP and when I bought it, it had no grate on it. So how does this affect riding? Does it improve top speed, or acceleration, or handeling, or none of the above? I would much rather have acceleration over top speed, so should I look for a stock grate, aftermarket, or leave it alone?

I have always wanted to take mine off and see.

I would assume that straight away it would be a little faster with less obstructions of the water flow.

I think you come into problems in two ways.

Sucking stuff up, like sticks, fish, small children, etc. that can ruin the impeller or worse.

And I think on turns, the water will not be directed into the intake and will just slide off to the side, so the ski would lose power on turns.

How does yours work on the turns?

They make some top-end aftermarket ones that are supposed to obstruct water flow less for better speed and accelleration, while still directing water into the intake on turns.

I doubt it would be all that noticeable unless you are a racer. Stock may be the easiest and cheapest way.

Try to find one from someone parting one out.

It does seem to loose thrust in turns fairly quick, but I have nothing to compare it to as this is the only ski I have rode in years. I was thinking of taking the one off the boat and see if it will fit just to see how it feels. Anyone know if the one off a 95 sportster will fit?

2 different part numbers, but it still may fit. Measure the distance between the bolt holes on both.

Ya I will next time I think of it and have time. How model specefic are intake grates, do I have to get one from a 97 XP or will other models work also?

Grate is $80 new. Not sure about your finances, but with mine, i would be looking for a used one that fits.

Measure the distance between screws and I will jump under my boat and see if they match. Also width and length of your intake.

Give me the same measurements for both your machines and we can see if they are starting to look similar.

um... slight problem, they are both 2 hours away at the cabin. I won't be able to get the measurements for another 2 weekends. :(

DOH!!!

Then we need to find you the correct one so you have it when you get there.

Seadooya would probably know which ones fit.

Seadooya must hate me :(
However doing some searching I think I have found the answer. It looks like the 97 XP has an intake grate specific to it
I'm assumeing this because on this site it is listed all by itself.
How much do you think I should pay for a stock one? I'm going to start hunting one down

Like I said above, the PARTS section lists it for $80. $79.49 to be exact.

It does look different in the picture. It looks like just two blades down the middle, where most I have seen are three or four blades spread out even.

It should work. They are listing it for the XP OR LTD.

Has two blades, like the exploded diagram shows.

$0.99 is a great price!!!

On my modded 96XP, I've run it with the intake grate removed for about 7 years now. Yet to suck anything bad into the pump, but there is always that danger. The advantages are that it tends to hook up better in chop or rough water and you get a little more top end out of it. This is coming from a worx scoop grate and also the stock grate before that. The grate does act a bit like a rudder so you loose a little (hardly noticeable) stability in the turns, but thats nothing beach house sponsons wont fix :)
